The ultrasonic probe is a "spin-off" from the non-destructive testing (NDT) field of atomic research. Demonstrated Dem-onstrated here is how the sound probe can be used to "see" inside a tooth note the vertical deviations on the horizontal oscilloscope line in the background, they represent a cavity in the tooth. The purpose of NDT is to find ways of looking inside solid objects, such as pipes in a nuclear reactor, without dismantling the .object or using x-rays. The research was started at the Atomic Energy Commission's Pacific Northwest Laboratory, while additional studies are under the sponsorship of the U.S. Public Health Service. (Photo by Battelle-Northwest) One of many hybrid varieties of tomatoes, Better Boy is new for this year. Its superior characteristics are resistance to several common tomato diseases and to nematodes (eel worms). Growing hybrid varieties of vegetables will save you cash for you'll produce sturdier plants, more disease-resistant in many cases and obtain greater yield (so you can use less space) as well ' as larger leaves, fruits or roots. If you're unfamiliar with hy brids, it's time you knew about them. They're the progeny of 2 different varieties, each selected se-lected as a parent for 1 or more outstanding characteristics that, combined, will mean a better plant for you, the gardener. After plants of both parents have been grown, pollinated with their own pollen generation genera-tion after generation to accentuate accen-tuate those important characters, charac-ters, and resulting seed has been harvested and replanted all those years, the result is an "inbred" line of plants scrawny and unbeautiful, but bearing the characters for which they were selected. When inbred plants are crossed, that is the pollen from the flowers of 1 parent has been brushed by hand on the pistils of blossoms of the other, plants grown from the resulting result-ing seeds will display "hybrid vigor". That's what you get in the hybrid seeds you buy for only a few cents more per packet than those of ordinary varieties. You also get the desirable characteristics char-acteristics for which the plant breeder has gone through the long, expensive process outlined out-lined above. There are hybrids of both flowers and vegetables. Most corn varieties available are hy-. brids; those mammoth petunias and marigolds are hybrids. Look in the catalogs or on the seed packets for the designation desig-nation Fi. This is shorthand for "first filial," a first generation hybrid from those inbred parent par-ent plants. Those varieties are your "best buy". WOMEN'S LIBERATION FASHION Women's liberation has had a considerable consid-erable EFFECT ON FASHION.
