Zion National Park with 2.02 inches was the largest amount reported followed by Provo Canyon with 1.64 inches and Tooele with 1.41 inches. The northwestern desert and eastern portion of the state reported less than a half-inch of moisture although most reporting stations recorded a measurable amount. For the sixth consecutive week temperatures averaged well above normal. Only the first week in January so far this year recorded below normal temperatures. tem-peratures. Averages ranged between 4 and 10 degrees above normal at most reporting stations but in the Uintah Basin temperatures were between 12 and 14 degrees above. The storm this past weekend was one of those occasional storms which bring heavier precipitation to the southern part of the state and strong easterly canyon winds in the north. The winds along the northern Wasatch front which reached gusts of 88 MPH, tipped over freight cars and semi-trucks between Far-mington Far-mington and Bountiful. Signs were twisted like putty along the highway, powerlines broken, and miscellaneous other pieces of mischief. As is often the case when unusual events occur many people began calling to ask if the weather conditions were not changing for the worse. The following quotation from the Diary of Wilford Woodruff dated November 9, 1864 should help to answer this question. "On my return home (to Salt Lake City from Kaysville) I encountered one of the old-time east winds which sweep down through the canyons and mountains east of Farmington. It was so severe that we had great difficulty in keeping the carriages from being upset. That night we stopped at Ezra Clark's in Bountiful. While there, the roof of the house was blown off, also that of the Bountiful meetinghouse. Haystacks were torn down and scattered over the country. These winds in early days were so frequent and severe as to give the people of Farmington and vicinity grave apprehension. They were so destructive and dreaded that President Young rebuked them in the name of the Lord and they immediately became less frequent." Mathew Cowley in reviewing the diary of Wilford Woodruff prior to publication in 1909 adds "In late years these winds have occurred in some of their old time severity." This diary indicates that these winds were of quite frequent occurrence oc-currence and of much severity in the days of the pioneers. The annual Christmas census by Society members accounted for about 25,806 individual birds of 85 different species. The birds counted ranged in size from the larger geese and herons to , the small finches, wrens, and sparrows. Some rare winter visitors were also seen, including a pair of wood ducks, prairie and peregrine falcons, a saw whet owl, and a yellow-bellied yellow-bellied sapsucker. The Division of Fish and Game recognized the value of these nongame birds to the ecology of the state and reminds residents that all Utah birds are protected by law. The law states: 'It shall be unlawful for any person to shoot at, kill, take, ensnare, net, trap, or hunt for any birds; or to rob or destroy any nest, egg, or young of any bird, except as provided in the Code. . ." The Board of Fish and Game has declared an open season on starling, crow, magpie, and English sparrow. All other species of birds are protected.
