Show 2 VThuriday, April 21, 194 First Concrete To Be Poured At Garfield Plant GARFIELD, Utah, April 11 (U.R) Kennecott Copper corporation corpora-tion announced that the firit concrete con-crete will be poured Friday lor the electrolytic cells at itt new $18,000,000 copper refinery being built south of Garfield. General Manager Louis Buck-man Buck-man said the plant should be completed about the middle of next year. It will be the first copper refinery in Utah. Buck-man Buck-man said it will provide about 800 new jobs, raising Kennecott's payroll to about 5,100 men approximately ap-proximately $19,000,000 a year total. The refinery will handle about 12,000 tons of finished copper monthly, about half of the production pro-duction of the firm's huge Bingham Bing-ham pit and the associated' mills and smelters at Magna, Garfield and Arthur. Output of the operation now goes to the east or west coasts in the form of blister copper that must be rjefined before it can be used. The new nine-acre plant will elminate these long, transcontinental transconti-nental hauls, Ruckman said. Construction Con-struction on the plant began last summer. Salem News By MRS. "" DAILY HERALD "Death Smog7 Test Brings Out Warning DONORA, Pa.,April 31 U.P School attendance at Webster elementary school was only "slightly off" today despite an anti-smoke groups' warning to parents to keep their children home during the experimental reproduction of the "death smog" which took 22 lives here last fall. Donora schools reported normal nor-mal attendance, and the principal prin-cipal at Rostraver township Grade school said 2$ students did not show up for classes. Normal absenteeism at the grade school is between 12 and 15 in an enrollment en-rollment of 230. George D. Clayton, head of the U. S. public health service field party investl gating smog dangers, termed "baseless" reports re-ports that 100 persons became HI during Jhe first and second days of the four-day test. "All of the doctors here agreed before the test to report immediately im-mediately any ill effects to residents," resi-dents," Clayton said. "Not one instance has been reported to us so far either from Webster or Donora." Officials of the Society for Better Living, an anti-smoke group formed after last October's disastrous "smog" had reported at least 25 persons asked for medjcal attention in Webster, across the Monongahela river from Donora, and 75 others complained com-plained of ill effects. party recently at the home of Mrs. Tiffany.
