Show Record Number Of Fans To See New Year's Bowl Games By CARL LUNDQUIST VUnlted Pres SporU Writer " - NEW YORK. Dec. 31 U. With , nothing much more at staice man the promotion of such auorted commodities as roses and raisins, sugar and salad, and alligators - and cigars, some 580,000 fans, an 4 all -time record, are expected to y gather around Saturday for 16 bowl football games. The record turnout, which prob- ably will exceed last year's total for the same number of games by 50.000, will pay more than $2,-000,000 $2,-000,000 in gate receipts to see the games and a lot of them will get rained on if long range weather forecasts are correct. Out of this total gate, the col leges will benefit handsomely with guarantees ranging from $110,000 to the Cotton bowl foes, Oregon and Southern Methodist, i rfown to $5,000 or so for the 'schools in the smaller games. Sellout Assured Once again the Rose bowl at Pasadena, Cal., will get the biggest crowd, with a sellout of 93,oou as gured to see the clash between California and Northwestern. However, because of the Big Nine-Pacific Nine-Pacific conference five year pact, the "take" from the game, $200,-000 $200,-000 guaranteed for each league, must be divide among the member mem-ber schools. Things are considerably better for Oklahoma and North Carolina, ' who will take home $105,000 apiece from New Orleans for whacking each other around in the Sugar bowl. Georgia and Texas will get $75,000 apiece for playing in the Orange bowl and , the other guarantees scale down. The Sugar bowl will have the sec-ond sec-ond largest crowd, 83.000, while a capacity turnout of 67,435 is certain cer-tain for the Cotton bowl and 60,-000 60,-000 will be on hand for the Orange bowl. The weather forecast fore-cast is for a warm, clear day in .Miami, for showers in New Or- leans, for clearing skies in Dallas and fair and dry for Pasadena. The Shrine East-West college Stojack, Gypsy Battle To Draw In Title Match all-star game at San Francisco will draw 62.000 despite probable rain and the proceeds, some $125,000. will go to the Shrine crippled children's hospital. For the Gator bowl at Jackson ville, Fla., where Misouri plays perfect record Clemson, fair and warm weather is forecast and each team should get around $50,000 in take home" pay if the crowd comes up to the expected 38,000. Good Weather Promised At Memphis, Tenn., Where Amvets are promoting the Mississippi Missis-sippi River Delta, Oklahoma A and M and William & Mary learns will earn about $30,000 each for their schools before a 30,000 crowd. The weather should be mild. Birmingham, Ala., which mod-estlv mod-estlv promotes all of the southland south-land in its Dixie bowl, expects a 25,000 crowd and whatever the proceeds, each of the teams. Baylor Bay-lor and Wake Forest, will get one-third. The weatherman says rain may be clearing up by game time. The promoters of the Harbor bowl at San Diego, Cal., tuna fisherman fish-erman Joe Medina and Ross K. O'Leno, an insurance, are peculiar among the post-season promoters. They admit that their game, matching Nevada and Villanova "can't possibly make money, but we just want to see a good game in San Diego. The teams get approximately ap-proximately $30,000 apiece and with a crowd of 23.000 at $4.50 ner ticket. Medina and O'Leno say Ihey're bound to take a. financial finan-cial licking. But the weather will be clear and sunny which may heln. The Sun bowl at El Paso, Tex., long a little money maker, finds West Virginia matched against Texas Miners and each will get $15,000 guaranteed. Cool weather uith no rain was forecast. The rime in the past has brought in enough money to finance the annual an-nual Sun carnival in which there are parades, bull fights, marathon races, and visits to Mexico by the players. It was an exciting match from 1 capacity crowd on edge out. Both grapplers appeared to be well worn out physically by the time the end came. "He is terrific,"-Stojack said in the dressing room after the match in referring to Gypsy Joe. "However, "How-ever, I would like to meet him again some time with no time limit." Although Stojack, a former college col-lege and professional football star, seemed to have the advantage advant-age most of the way and was the aggressor a good portion of . the match, he was never able to win a fall against the wily and rugged Gypsy. Stojack, a former Washington State college grappler who never lost a collegiate match appears to be almost thin, but he continual ly amazed the crowd with feats of strength, as well as his speed, agility and wrestling science. While the Gypsy used a few unsportsmanlike tactics, he wasn't quite as mean as he usually is. There were times when it appeared ap-peared as if the Gypsy was go- . ing. to end the match with his holds, but Stojack was a little too clever, fast and strong for him.
