So you DAILY HERALD Army Strength Seriously, Say WASHINGTON. Dec. 2 (U.R Army strength is dwindling seriously army officials dis closed today; and congressional action may be necessary to raise the pay to stimulate recruiting. The army is getting only half the necessary recruits to fill re quirements. Already the army is 70,000 men short of requirements and is losing about 10,000 men a month. The picture is a little brighter in the navy and the air forces The air force is recruiting about 10,000 men a month despite strict er requirements and has the nucleus of a "going concern." The navy reports it is recruit ing and discharging about an equal number of men. The bal ance was struck recently when the navy relaxed its physical standards. The latest figures on the sizes of the three armed forces are: navy 440,032; air force 327,000; army ground forces 600,000 a total of 1,367,032. Army officers said the situation situa-tion is "serious." If the size of the ground armies is allowed to drop too far, it may weaken occupation oc-cupation forces. The navy is outstripping the other two services by signing up about 15,000 men a month. The army takes in about the same numers as the air force 10.000. But the air force can expancM easily to 401,000 by July 1, 1948, its authorized strength, with present recruiting because it is the smallest of the three services. The navy is in the position of having to hold its present strength to 394,232 enlisted men and still drop about 4,000 officers to reach an authorized strength of 42,000 GREAT AMERICAN BARGAINS $111,613.00 Worth of (Used Repairs Necessary) AUTOMOTIVE TRUCKS and TRAILERS at SPOT BOD SALE ONE DAY ONLY " TUESDAY, DEC. 16, 1947 " AT 9:00 A. Action that probably will bo proposed to congress includes: 1. Raise the pay of the army from bottom to top. z. Authorization to use more civilians to replace soldiers in non-combat jobs. 3.
