Show There's a Land Yhere a Dollars Still 7orth a Budt BY FREDERICK C. OTIIMAN , United Press SUff Correspondent WASHINGTON,. Sept. I (U.PJ I'm back' from a month on the Rock- Candy- Mountain where strawberry ice cream grows on trees and a dollar's still a buck, and X hate to wake up. i So ' let me " squeeze you a tall glass' of iresh pineapple Juice (with a little lime in It so it won't be 'too sweet) and tell you about Guatemala, land of the free lunch, the: goggle-eyed turista, bananas in eight flavors, and galloping inflation., in-flation., ; Yes sir, said Senora Adele De Morales at Santiago on the shore of Lake Atitlan the cost of living's something awful. Filet mignon's 22 cents a pound! And two dozen red bananas,' weighing a - pound and a half each, now cost a nickel. The fruit that looks and tastes like pink ice cream is two cents an apron-full. ' l' The senora was sitting 'on her front porch overlooking the three volcanoes across the lake, while she told about her troubles. The price of avocadoes is sky high. She can't get two big ones for less than one centavo; they used to be three for a penny. And that's the way it goes, she moaned looking to my bride for sympathy. ; Why, she has to pay $7 a month Postal Clerks Re-elect Officers ' LOGAN, Sept. 1 (U.R) The . Utah State Federation of Post Office Clerks and auxiliary had -ended their annual convention here today with an election of officers. Mr. and Mrs. Albert O. Anderson Ander-son of Logan were reelected presidents pres-idents of the group. Principal speaker, at yesterday's session was William J. Otte, national secretary-treasurer of the EPOC. Of course, the senora added, he's an expert horticulturist; his salary isn't outrageously out-rageously high, considering. - Even so, she said, ' what s a housewife- to do when she must pay four cents a dozen for lemons and three cents each for ripe pineapples? pine-apples? . , I ran into some of this Guatemalan Guate-malan inflation, myself. Up at Chichicastenango I had to pay ten cents for a pound of fresh cocoa-nut cocoa-nut candy. And down in Guatemala Guate-mala City the bocita situation Is something awful. "Bocita" is a Spanish word, meaning little things for the mouth. Anybody who orders a IS cents bottle of lager beer, expects ' some free bocita to go with it. These now come in medium size platters, instead of big ones, and they're only one layer deep. They usually consist of beef sandwiches, pickles, cheese, and toasted tortillas. tor-tillas. Trouble is a fellow who's really hungry must spend 30 cents for two bottles of beer before he gets enough to eat If this situation doesn't change for the better, one of my Guatemalican friends said, a revolution is inevitable. Even haircuts are hish priced in Guatemala. A trim de luxe with a brisk rub and a squirt of verbena tonic costs 35 cents, though I was told I could have had the job done cheaper in a less flossy estab- Ilshment. Easy come, easy go, I always say. Oregon Publisher Dies In Portland PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 1 (U.R) Oregon State Senator Merle R. Streamliners On Daily Schedule SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 1 (U.R) The Southern Pacific railroad's "City of San Francisco" streamliners stream-liners on the San Francisco-Chi cago run began operating on a daily schedule today. They previously pre-viously made the run three times a week. Southern Pacific officials said the streamliners will continue to operate on a 39 -hour schedule with no change in arrival and departure times. - This is the heritage of the American working man as he rests on Labor Day, 1947. Nowhere; else In the world do men eat so well, three times a day; get paid as much for a. five-day work week; or live in such well-convenienced homes. In Communist Russia, for example, the average man works a month to earn what ah American makesin a week. A chicken costs 50 rubles ($3), a fish $3.50, and it takes six months pay to buy a suit of clothes. Years of perseverance have.won the American worker the benefits he enjoys today along with the world's highest standard of living.
