Show 12 Wednesday. April .16, 194T DAILY HERALD Ban of Jackson Hole Monument iition Draws Oppos m m WASHINGTON, April 16 (U.R The Izaak Walton League of America today opposed . legislation legisla-tion to abolish title Jackson Hole. Wyo., national monument so that the property can be used for 1 grazing and hunting. Kenneth A. Reid, -executive director di-rector of the league, told a house public lands subcommittee that much of the opposition to the monument was "inspired by clever clev-er publicity" and not "based on factual information." Reid also criticized parts of a report made by- the committee last year - which said that ere a tion of the ' monument meant great tax losses to the state, and . that the 221.000-acre monument comprised some, of the best agri cultural and cattle country in the state. . The loss' from taxes was much lower than the committee reported, report-ed, he said, and the land was not the best grazing and agricultural land in the state. Boundaries of the monument may not be perfect, Reid said. He suggested that they could be modified, but he said that the Grand Teton National park barely bare-ly encompasses the Teton mountain moun-tain range. Additional- area is needed whether in the form of a national na-tional park or monument, he said. Reid predicted that the state of Wyoming would be better off economically by the increased tourist trade than by use ofthe land for grazing. Fairfield Osborn, president of the New York Zoological Society So-ciety and chairman of the board of the Jackson Hole Wildlife Park, Inc., also opposed the bill offered by Rep. Frank A. Barrett. R.. Wyo. Osborn said abolishing the monument will endanger the herds of elk, moose and deer in the area. Reid Osborn and Fred M. Packard, Pack-ard, field executive of the National Na-tional Parks association, said the monument was created for the benefit of all the people of the TInitpH States and should hp Vcpnt in that use.
