Utah rraley Chooses lif-!i- 1 weeiuy-w 2t Friday On would ruin the field for the big Thanksgiving day battle with Utah State, so the game was set for 2:30 Friday, on the Granite field. This much of the muddle was 111 settled among' the weather man. the Big Nine bosses and the state committee. The rest of the squabble is still up in the air, at a dead end street. Box Elder's bull in a china shop, Coach Earl Ferguson, still refuses to consider any otner date than Tuesday, November 26. Both Big Nine coaches. Max Warner of Provo and John Vranes of West, are just as emphatic in wanting to play the state title game on November 30. The state committee is backing Ferguson, the Bfg Nine is backing Warner i ands Vranes. Such a business: Meanwhile, the weather again took a hand in the proceedings. If the current bad spell continues, as It looks like it may, the university uni-versity stadium would not be available on Tuesday, making the game played on that day if it is played shift to another an-other field. Also, the state - committee tacked a rider on their proposal of last Tues- ' day stating that if weather should be bad. the Nov. 26 game would be postponed to November 30, which Is what everyone but Coach Ferguson wants anyway. But one thing iff certain about the whole business. Provo and West will collide Friday afternoon, after-noon, and once again the weather will be in favor of West However, How-ever, despite the fact that West beat Provo in the mud two weeks ago, the chances are that th Provo squad will be at full strength for the battle and a lot of smart money will be riding on the Bulldogs. . Co-captain Kay Bandley, ace defensive man for the Dogs who was out of the West battle with a back injury, will probably be ready to play, and if not. Coach Warner discovered a clicking combination against Carbon that had Len MacKay playing1 the other backfield post along with Brown, Ford and Stapley. Friday will decide the Big Nine title. Now the only question ques-tion is. who is going to decide the state title muddle? They won only one game, these battlinc Wildcats, bnt they went in against bigger opponents all year long and threw terrific scares into every ev-ery team they played. Several . times only tough breaks stopped the Cats from win ning ball games, yet they never did come up with a long string of alibis. Fbr sheer fight and spirit, they were the best team in the region, but the games and the honors are still determined by the final score. . Somehow we feel that it is entirely in order that we give our accolade to the fightingest little team we've seen in years win lose or draw always playing up to the hilt with the highest traditions tradi-tions of sportsmanship. It isn't easy to lose every week, yet still put up a whale of a fight the very next game. Those boys had it. "it" being the stuff of which true champions are made. Just a word of explanation about some of our choices. In our opinion, either Army or Notre Dame, on any given day, could have beaten any other team in the country except each other and hence the abundance of players play-ers from the two teams on the first two teams chosen. Closest selection was at the quarterback spot where Arny Tucker, Army's great field general, gen-eral, lost the nod to Johnny Lu-Jack Lu-Jack of Notre Dame only because we felt that there were too many Array men on the first team with five of them making the grade. Army wasn't that much better than the rest of the field. The in clusion of Lujack instead of Tucker doesn't lessen the effee tiveness of the first team in the slightest, however. The first team:. These teams that persist in playing tie games are beginning to make our crystal look slightly punchdrunk. Four ties in the last two weeks are mighty rough. This brings our season record to 38 right, 6 wrong and 4 ties, which, we regret to say, also have to be counted as wrong. For this week, however, we'll stick out our necks, bet on all the local talent, keep everyone happy but our average and pick: PROVO over West With all their team back in play, we look for the Bulldogs to reverse their previous loss to the Panthers. The Miners have dependedal-' most entirely this season on a powerful ground attack to carry them to their regional .title and il?t0 ?he statefinals. Led by, Jack Knudsen and Billy Boron, the defendins titleholders boast one of the most feared offenses on the ! ' state on the ground. Bingham has one tie marring their record this year, with Cyprus in the final re- ' gional game of the season,, while the Tigers have rolled to eight, straight wins, with their well-balanced well-balanced attack featuring passing " and funning both. Ralph Willet and Co-captain Stan Cole, who led the Tiger assault as-sault against Morgan last week, are the two main cogs in the i Lincoln ground attack. Cole, a J triple-threat ace, is one of the j best passers in the state, and i given any break at all by the weather, will give the Miners a lot of trouble with his trusty arm. The hard-hittng Willet, a 15-year-old sophomore, has been displaying dis-playing a terrific amount of drive in all the Tiger games to , date, and will keep the Miner defense from spreading too much in an effort to stop Cole's passes and Ford's end sweeps. The stocky youngster scored three touchdowns touch-downs against Morgan last week, and is rated as one of the most promising ball players ever to be developed at the Lincoln school.
