Show ft Minnie the Mouser: Kicking The Mice Around Beat A Path To Her Door By NEA Service BAYONNE. N. J., Sept. 29 (NEA) Sometimes cats get their names in the papers because an eccentric old party has died and left them a lot of money. Not Minnie. Minnie gets her name in the papers because when she died the other day at the ripe-old-cat-age of 13 years she left something to another cat. What she left was a job. Now Minnie may have had a heart as big as a whale, for she loved kittens and mothered more than 100 of them in her time. But she was no moocher. She earned her living kicking the mice around. Minnie was carried on the payroll pay-roll of the Standard Oil Development Develop-ment Co. laboratories here as Minnie Esso, which is a nice little touch of press agentry, indeed, but a well-deserved handle just the same. Frank Hatch, head janitor at the laboratory, found Minnie on the premises in 1933, a mouser without portfolio. Because she was a better mouser than he had seen before, he beat a path to her door with milk and salmon to make sure she wouldn't leave. Eventually a sharp-eyed auditor audi-tor discovered an item charged to "Minnie"' was showing up on the books every month. He found it was for the milk and salmon. There was a hurried conference of directors, after which a press agent dashed out to tell the world that Minnie the Mouser was a cat on a payroll. In those days, Minnie got $3.30 a month. She had been raised to $4.40 before she died. Minnie taught herTOO offspring all the tricks of the mousing r V7! A.. J, " - Vis I fi 1 i ( rA Jr I i ' a 1 f Man Found Dead On U. P. Engine LARAMIE. It is one of Minnie's sons, as a matter of fact, who has taken her place on the payroll here. And in the cat circles of this town, it is said that Timmie. son of Minnie, remembers to lay a mouse on the neat little grave In back of the laboratory in tribute tri-bute to Minnie, who was here and had to go, kicking the mice around. DAILY HERA1D "SSSv.SSgni PAGE? Drummer Invents Mechanical Baton By CLAIRE COX I United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. Sept. 27 (UJ Drum mer Al Carter got even with the orchestra leader today. He announced his invention ofj a mechanical baton which he hopes will make the orchestra; leader as unnecessary as a fiddle player in a drum and bugle corps. Carter got busy on his invention inven-tion after he lost his job in Salt Lake City. An orchestra leader fired him and replaced him with a mechanical drum beater. j The gadget which put him out of a. Job, Carter said. Is attached to an electric motor. It has to be set to the proper tempo for each number. In retaliation. Carter perfected his mechanical baton. It waggles atop a five-foot pole every time the drummer smacks his drum, and keeps the players on the beat, Carter explained. It can do everything every-thing an orchestra leader does, except fire the drummer, he claimed. James C. Petrillo's American Federation of Musicians, which has a lot of rules for orchestra players, hasn't given any thought to the enroachment of the mechanical me-chanical drum beater and baton waver in the music field yet. An official at the musicians' union headquarters 'said the AFM had not formulated any policy to deaj. with the problem. "The drummer is the most im portant person in an orchestra, Carter said. "He's got poise. He's got personality. He's terrific S "The band leader is about thV only thing a band doesn't need He just stands up and waves a stick and distracts the players. "It's just a lot of wasted motion', as far as I'm concerned." . Carter said his feud with or chestra leaders started about tha-time tha-time he became a professional drummer 10 years ago. ... "Don't get me wrong," he said-"There's said-"There's nothing personal in it Most bands have lots of sax play era and trumpet players, but there's only one drummer." .j Carter said it was a shame thai-drummers thai-drummers got only $100 or $123. a week for doing all the work, while the leaders got as much as $5,000 for waving a little stick' "Why don't these guys ge ' back In the bands where they belong and do some work?" r he asked. Carter said his invention is available to any orchestra leader; So are his services as a drummer.- "I'm now at liberty," he said Irish Chile. potatoes originated f-WJ-t -'.
