County Labor Association to Meet School Heads on Harvest Problem The dire problem of harvesting harvest-ing Utah county's bounteous peach and pear harvest without the aid of children of school age, due to the early opening of schools in Utah county, will come before a meeting of the farm labor association and school officials of the three districts tonight. The meeting which will be held in the city and county building at 8:30 o'clock will seek to strike St compromise, wherein children of farm families may stay out for minimum of two weeks and help with the harvest, according to Lee R. Taylor, manager of the county farm labor association. "We have written letters to the superintendents of the Nebo. Al pinei and Provo school districts to see if there cannot be some, way in which we can get approxi mately. 800 children with farm backgrounds into; the orchards when the emergency arises,". Mr Taylor stated. "In the letter we asked for a delay in the opening of school. The peach and pear harvests this year are the largest we have had in years, Mr. Taylor explain ed. "Unless we receiyg some? -cooperation from the school boards and get enough school children to help harvest the heavy crops, much of the fruit will not be picked," Mr. Taylor concluded. Girl Drowns In Salt Lake Pool 1 SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 13 (U.R) Carmen Griffin, 13, drowned here: yesterday afternoon after telling a playmate she was "going to see how deep the pool is" while swimming at Wasatch plunge. The playmate, 11-year-old Tommy Tom-my Everhill, said the girl then walked toward the deep end of the pool, went under water, came up once and called for help and then slipped back into the water. Fire department rescue workers were unable to revive her. . Two Orem Sailors On West Virginia Reports from relatives indicate that there are two Orem boys staioned on the battleship West Virginia, besides the three Utah county men mentioned in a recent release from the navy. The. other two are Max E. Pyne, buglemaster on board the battleship, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Pyne of Orem and A eel Dewey Smith, seaman. 1st class, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Smith of Orem. Pyne has been in the navy two years. He played ithe cornet in the Lincoln high school band and was a frequent Instrumentalist with the Mendelssohn male chorus. He attended navy training train-ing school at San Diego and has been on board the West Virginia through all its battles since "the ship was reconditioned after the Pearl Harbor, attack. He has a brother,' Pvt. Harold Pyne who has recently completed his basic training at Camp Maxie, Texas and is now awaiting assign ment. Smith is one of three brothers in the service. Charles L.
