Cat 0J.R) This San Fernando Valley community com-munity today has practically eliminated its racial minority youth problem. Juvenile officers Glenn Hyden and Dwight O'Dell, who used to make nightly arrests of Mexican-American Mexican-American youths in Canoga park, are now just about out -of work .there and extremely happy about it. Idea of the Sterling Club is to bring closer family ties through neighborhood playgrounds built and financed by parents; youths and merchants in that vicinity. -Having observed success of the Burbank, Cal., playgrounds, parents pa-rents asked the juvenile authori-r ties and social workers Vera Os-ter Os-ter and Unda Hamren to hep Them establish one. Lot Former Eyesore The Mexican Canoga Club, gave its clubroom for the first meeting meet-ing and donated the first money. A vacant lot was "leased" from a rancher for the fee of one dollar per year. Rubble-littered, cactus-strewn, inK-noied and crustedwith bottles, bot-tles, the lot was a neighborhood eyesore when it was donated. But six weeks later wast a clean attractive at-tractive playground, with 150 teen-agers and 300 children using it, competing for the swings, slides, teeter-toters. basketball, tether-ball, boxing- gloves and horseshoe pits with their equally enthusiastic parents. An entire Sunday afternoon was devoted to cleaning and leveling the site. Mothers and fathers removed trash and weeds; farmers loaned trucks tr haul away the litter; kids picked up DroKen trotties and rusty tin cans. ivioneiary contribution s lor equipment came from the community com-munity board of directors, service stations, markets, the high school PTA. Stores, and residents until more than $3,000 had been raised. Ranchers Give Granite : ' rjyden and O'Dell obtained chain-link fencing and a sign labeling la-beling the playground "Roosevelt Park." Decomposed granite was bought and spread by Canoga Ranchers. Equipment was built from scrap pipe and other material in the Los Angeles police workshop, costing a fraction of that of regular reg-ular city playgrounds and considerably con-siderably reducing delivery time. Youngsters told- the Sterling Club exactly what they wanted in play equipment and got it. Stop Blaming Youngsters . Seventy-yearrold wealthy re tired rancher J.' M. Franco volunteered, volun-teered, as unpaid director of the playground And he keeps the children in well-mannered order at all time. The playground has not had a serious accident since its inception. The Water and "Power department depart-ment djonated line; poles and reflectors re-flectors and located wiring to make the playground available at night. &m -Dances, family gafi J, fes tivals, movies and adult classes have taken their places on the playground with the program pro-gram still expanding. And Canoga Cano-ga Park's Mexican - American youngsters no longer draw public criticism for every misdeed in tne community. Of course, there are not many misdeeds anymore. As Franco says, "It just shows what people can do when they have the will to do something and work together on it." Poisoned Water Detectors Worked Out By Case Men CLEVELAND. V.R) Researchers Research-ers at the Case School of Applied Sciences at Cleveland have disclosed dis-closed that they have been working work-ing two years on a water purification purifi-cation project and that as a result re-sult of their 'efforts, American fighting men around the world have avoided poisoned water. The exact method involved in the purification system is still a secret. The project was assigned when the Germans either were poison ing every well or putting signs on them marking them poisoned. The work was under the direction direc-tion of Prof. Matthew M. Braid-each, Braid-each, who, along with four assistants, assis-tants, found antidotes for about a dozen contamination agents. They developed a kit weighing only a few ounces. It contained several tubes of dry reagents for use in detecting and identifying poisons put in water by the enemy. ene-my. Some of the purification processes proc-esses developed by the Case men have an application in city water systems, Pro!. Braidech said.
