Harlem Tommy Grieves He Has No Impersonators BY JACK CUDDY NEW YORK, Dec. 21 (UJ0 Harlem Tommy Murphy, famous old-time fighter, grieves because no one impersonates him any more. Most notables blow their tops when unprincipled characters assume as-sume their names and try to cash in on their reputations. But not silver-thatched Tommy, who for 17 years battled the best bantams, feathers and lightweights of his era. He loves impersonators. "I guess the world has forgotten forgot-ten me," Tommy remarked sadly last night in his room at Brooklyn Brook-lyn Hotel St. George. "I guess that's why they don't impersonate me any more." He listened to the wintry wind whistling past his window, and remarked, "wouldn't it be swell if a phony Harlem Tommy would pop up right now say out in Los Angeles out in the California sunshine?" That remark was the tip-off on Tommy's affection for the fakes who had used his name in the past No matter how clever the imposter, he ultimately aroused suspicions among victims or competitors com-petitors where he was operating. To prove the Charlatan's quack-cry, quack-cry, presence of the real Harlem Tommy usually was required on the scene. This meant a free trip for Murphy, a round of entertainment, entertain-ment, and invariably a sizeable gratuity. The middle-sized man, with the cauliflowered left ear and de-touring de-touring nose, admittedly dolefully that he hadn't heard of a pretender pre-tender to his person since 1932, when "the great impersonation" was staged at Colon in Panama. "That Panama phony must have been quite a feller," the 59-year old ex-pugilist reminisced. "He did the best job of them all. Using my name, he built up a big saloon and dance hall business, and even got Interested in a brewery. A smart newspaper man. Ed Scott, got suspicious and told his suspicions suspi-cions to a rival brewery. "Scott and the brewery owners began investigating. They located me in New York and invited me to come down, with all expenses paid and something else in the bargain. I'll say I went. Had a nice long boat trip, and spent 25 days in Panama. They treated me like a king. Never had such a good time in my life. A couple days before I arrived, my impersonator imper-sonator cleared out of town. Someone tipped him off." "Did you tip him off, so you wouldn't have to belt him around?" the reporter asked. "Not exactly," grinned Tommy. "I only notified certain parties in Colon that I was coming down, and that I would bet $500 I would knock the phony out in less than three minutes. I was glad he left town. How could I hit a feller who had done so much for me?" Tommy would like to take a trip to California. He hasn't been there since he tried to wrest the lightweight crown from Willie Ritchie at San Francisco in 1914, the year before Murphy retired. He is a tool checker now at the Todd shipyard in Brooklyn. He is comfortably fixed financially, thanks to his savings and to an income in-come from an insurance sideline. But he doesn't feel that he can afford to spend for a pleasure trip. That's why he is hoping for an impersonator or an "angel." 'Vols' Settle Down To Stiff Practice PASADENA, Cal., Dec. 21 CJ.P0 The University of Tennessee Volunteers knuckled down to work under warm skies today preparing for their Jan. 1 Rose bowl meeting with the University of Southern California Trojans.
