Sen. Thomas Wants Women in Army WASHINGTON, April 29 (U.R) The war department wants women wo-men In the army, and so does Sen. Elbert D. Thomas, D., Utah. But when he brought up the Idea yesterday. Sen. Francis T. Maloney, D., Conn., said he "just didn't think It was proper," and thereby precipitated a tattle of -the sexes that some observers believed be-lieved would eventually be settled set-tled by the senators' wives not the senators. Thomas started an almost daylong day-long debate by Introducing a substitute sub-stitute to a bill already passed ' by the house to creat a WAAC Women's Auxiliary Armycorps. His substitute would make it possible pos-sible for women actually to Join the army, not Just an auxiliary force. "The war department and the army want this passed," he said, "they have indicated that time is an Important element, and I intend in-tend to continue to work for its speedy passage." The house, he pointed out, has passed a bill allowing women to Join the navy, so why not the army? Maloney said he didn't object to the formation of the auxiliary corps, but "when you start talking talk-ing about' sending, them everywhere every-where that soldiers go, and hav- . ing them do everything that soldiers sol-diers do, except shoulder a gun, then thars-anoOTet' question.
