Thomas, well known resident of this city will observe in a quiet way, Saturday, the 8Sth anniversary annivers-ary of his birth. Because of illness ill-ness in the family and recent bereavement, be-reavement, no social observance is planned but friends of Mr. Thomas are expected to call during dur-ing th afternoon. He was born in Mcrthyr Tydvil, Wales, Dec. 21. 1R52. His parents were Richard and Mary Morgan Thomas. His father was a coal miner and when Morgan was four years old he was killed in a mine, accident. Following the death of the father, Hj-rum, one of the older brothers came to America settling set-tling at Spanish Fork and in 1S73 the mother, Morgan, one sister, Celia and a brother David, sailed for America in the U. S. steamer, "Idaho." After working on a farm for a short time and buying a home for the mother, Mr. Thomas, followed the footsteps of his father and went to Winter Quarters, Quart-ers, then called Pleasant Valley, where he was one of the pioneer coal miners. While there he met Ella Clark and they were married mar-ried in 1865. In 1900 he accepted a position as janitor of the Mammoth Mam-moth schools and lived there until un-til 1907. The family returned to this city in lf-07. Mr. Thomas was gifted as a leader in singing. He helped organize and lead an L. D. S. choir in Mammoth, also, at Winter Quarters. After coming here he helped organize and led for a while the Fourth ward choir. He served for 23 years at the Central school at Spanish Fork and for some years at the Twees school. He is a member of the elders quorum of the Fourth ward. Seven sons and daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas. One son died in infancy, the ethers eth-ers grew to maturity. One son, John C. Thomas died a few weeks ago. The remaining sons and daughters are: R. C. Thomas and Mrs. P. F. Clifford, Salt Lake City; Morgan C. Thomas, Way Cros3, Georgia; Mrs. Naomi Hcn-richsen. Hcn-richsen. Las Vega3, Nevada; Hv-rum Hv-rum C. Thomas, St. George, Utah. He has ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildron. New Cable to Aid in National Defense r i V : . I U ! Later in the afternoon after-noon a dlicious lunch was served to the eleven who attended. Mrs. W. T. Hyde, Sr., has been ernfined to her bed for the past week suffering from the flu. Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Maxfield spent Tuesday visiting relatives in Farmington. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Hyde, Sr., received word from their son Robert Rob-ert who recently . enlisted in the United States Army stating he had been assigned to the map making division of the Engineers. Mac Grosbeck motored to Grey Eagle. Calif., this week for an extended --visit with his brother yyron Grosbeck, 'who is employed th'T. . Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Day and Miss Eva Buhler spent Monday in Provo combining business with pleasure. Elder Robert Green of Salt Lake accompanied him. They purchased a car and drove home. Elder Blake has spent the past 25 months in the East Central mission. He has been president of the Virginia East district dis-trict the past ten months. Prior to that time he was mission cJerk for seven months at headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky. He labored labor-ed in Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ken-tucky, North Carolina, and West Virginia. His many friends are glad to welcome him home. A one-act play "Unto. You a Sign Is Given" was presented in the assembly program Tuesday at Mutual. Drama director Walter Holdaway was in charge. The cast of characters were Ariel Larsen, Mrs. Armanel Larsen, Miss Arva Williams, Misa Evalyn Young, Ross Holdaway and Dean Larsen. .' Mrs. Miltdh L. Holdaway enter tained the guide class of Primary at h?r home Monday afternoon. A check was made on the Trail Builders Log. A social followed and games were played and refreshments re-freshments served.; Present were , Robert Holdaway, Dale Harding, Kay Madsen, Richard Larsen, Leo and LeRoy Holdaway. Mrs. Jov O. Clegg has spent the past few days in Salt Lake City with her parents, Mr. and Mrs- T. Franklin Griffin. A Christmas aocial was held at Relief society Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Myrtle Christenspn of the stake board gave the Literary lesson. les-son. Adam Bede. A duet was rendered by Mrs. Clara Anderson and Mrs. Ideal Toone, Mrs. Phyllis Phyl-lis Anderson gave a Christmas storv and Mrs. Anita Varley a reading. The room was decorated for the occasion. A large Christmas Christ-mas tree beautifully trimmed and lighted stood in the corner and the gifts for each was placed on it. A delicious tray luncheon was served by Mrs. Mabel Bunker, Mrs. Rikka Harding and Mrs. Julia Andreason. Mrs. Armanell Larsen was a Salt Lake visitor Wednesday.
