"HfiRALD.T' THURSDAY, AUGUST 1," 19'40 REPORT DEFENDS PAROLE SYSTEM One hundred and forty-three defendants of 182 prosecuted by William Stanley Dunford, Fourth district attorney, were convicted. according to Mr. Dunford's bien nial report forwarded to the attorney at-torney general today. Thirteen of the 183 cases were dismissed, and 14 cases are still pending. Only 12 defendants were acquitted, F ; " ' , " ; ' A significant part of the report Is that of the 143 defendants convicted, con-victed, 84 were placed on probation. proba-tion. "Only nine of these defend ants, so far, have violated the necessary to commit them to the penitentiary," Mr. Dunrord reported. report-ed. , , , "The failures, therefore, amount to only a : little more than nine and a half per .cent of the total placed on probation. Eighty-five men are still effectively, keeping the terms and conditions of their orders, and are remaining out of penal institutions because of their diligence and dependability. Fifty-six ofthe defendants convicted con-victed - were committed to institutions insti-tutions and six were fined. Of the convictions, 35 were for second degree x burglary, 24 were for grand larceny, 13 for forgery, 1 for drunken driving, 10 for depriving de-priving an owner of his automobile and the rest for other violations, such as assault and battery, carnal car-nal knowledge, liquor violations, etc.' . , j - ". , : .'. Aue. 1 UE) Monta Johnson, 35. returned to hut residence in the Salt Lake City jail today after a 24-hour vacation trip. Johnson achieved ' considerable fame last February when he was booked for "drunken driving twice in, three days. lie drew a jail term on the second charge. Released yesterday, the prison er was picked up within a few hours ' for drunkenness. He explained to City Judge Wilford Moyle that he had visited a dentist immediately after quitting quit-ting ; the jail, and . had had sev eral teeth pulled. ' "The dentist ; gave me a few drinks of whiskey, instead of an anaesthetic," Johnson said. "He was afraid gas or ether might injure my heart."
