Nor did ' the unusually severe technical demands made upon each instrumentalist stand in the ,way of a highly finished performance. Pleasant Surprise - The composition Itself was a definitely pleasant surprise to the numerous trained . musicians amongr ' the listeners. Since the work had been nationally re cog: nlzed and signally honored, : it had been more or less taken for granted that it was a thoroughly worthy work entitled to a permanent per-manent place in chamber music literature. But last evening's per formance proved that it far ex ceeded . the fondest expectations of the most exacting . critic pres ent. After adjusting to the de cidedly modern medium of ' ex pression even the less expert in the audience deeply enjoyed the many novel and surprising tonal err ecu of the first movement; the sudden entrance of the mut ed strings In the . second, which produced an . exceptionally beautiful beau-tiful doloroso effect;; and the great contrasts ana enormous climaxes, relieved by melodious and lyrical strains, of the last movement, where folk-song material ma-terial is ingeniously intertwined with contrasting materials. The rhythmic- effects, especially in the allegro vivace, and the great feeling of . power pervading the entire .... work, ever progressing from climax to greater climax, were particularly admired. The entire group, pianist, Quartet, Quar-tet, and composer, was repeatedly repeated-ly called to the stage to receive an ovation at " the hands ' of the enthusiastic and Keenly respon sive audience. i - Final Concert Tonight: The Piano Quintet In P Minor by Cesar Franck was the only other number on . the program and preceded the . Robertson Quintet. It was given an .exquisite .ex-quisite reading. The vigor and sudden changes in rhythms and dynamics of the first movement were carefully and artistically brought out.
