May 7, 1880 Received from my neice Mamie Hardy a splendid likeness of herself and baby. Wrote to her by return mail. Also wrote Platte and Joseph (sons with the San Juan mission). mis-sion). Cold. Frost last night. May 21 Lucy, Joseph Platte and I went to Fillmore (from Oak Creek) with Bro. Lovell. Went to Bro. Callister's. Found him sick and looking very bad. Stayed there nights, and most of the time days while there. May 24 Home to Oak Creek, facing cold north wind. Quite sick yesterday. I have moved my bed into my sister Caroline's north room. Junex4 Cool. Prospect of frost. Have planted peas, beans, corn, etc., on F. R- Lyman's lot. Francis Marion Lyman and wife Rhoda staying here all night on road to Fillmore. June 15 Received a letter from my sister Emily Young, also a well filled sack of partly worn clothing for my use and also for my sister Caroline's family. Annie An-nie able to walk some. June 18 Caroline busy weaving weav-ing etc. We have commenced to can gooseberries. June 25 Lett from Platte and Joseph. Platte is,now in Colorado. I stay at my house during the day, at Caroline's at night. We are busy preserving and canning aooseberries. Weather warm dur ing day, cool and comfortable at1 nignt. July 2 Am carding wool into rolls and my daughter Lucy spins it. We are very busy preparing to go to San Juan. Lucy, baby and I are living by, ourselves. Seems very lonesome to me as I have never had so small a family before, be-fore, but thankful I am not quite alone. July 4 George Lovell and wife ate dinner with us. Wrote to my brother Edward Partridge,, but he came before the mail went. (To Be Continued) Panel Discussion At BYU Conducted By P-T Association Leading educators participated: in a panel discussion Thursday i night under the auspices of the' BY High school PTA, held at the Joseph Smith building, with An-tone An-tone K. Romney as moderator. The subject of the panel was concern-1 edvith what parents should ex- pect In children and what children chil-dren should expect in parents. I Participants were Dr. Le Royj Bishop, Prof. Mark K. Allen and Prof. Elvert Hines. The responsibility of the parents par-ents and the community towards the children was brought out in1 relation to a proper evaluation! of activities, some of which tend1 to confuse and distract the child. A community council was proposed pro-posed to coordinate activities and avoid too many conflicts. Music was under the direction of Prof. J. W. McAllister. Officers to serve next year were installed under the direction of Mrs. Lee Buttle, Provo PTA council president, presi-dent, as follows: Mrs. Effie Pine-gar, Pine-gar, president; Principal Herbert Christensen, first vice president; Mrs. Samuel Blackham, second vice president and Mrs. Marie Webster, secretary. Stingiest Woman Cares For Needy CHANDLER, Okla. (U.R) A woman who proudly claims the title of "stingiest woman in Chandler" spends most of her time trying to take care of five war-stricken European families Miss Fannie Filtsch has to keep busy saving and gathering food and clothing to keep an average of five packages each week )i the mails to her "adopted" faml lies in Germany, Hungary and Austria. Miss Filtsch, a middle-aged woman with no family of her own, lives in extremely modest circumstances and she has to be stingy to gather enough to fill those ZZ-pound packages. She saves scraps of cloth and old hats, collects clothing and food and makes home-made soap from wastes collected in Chandler cafes.
