Show Thornton, Billings To Head Polio Drive, Starts Jan. 14 Seth Billings will head the Provo city campaign in the 1949 March of Dimes polio campaign, it was announced Saturday by J. W. Thornton, Utah county polio drive chairman. - Mr. Billings has pledged hts support with that of Provo Elks lodge, 849, who will lead out in the annual drive. Ira HUggins, chairman of the polio drive in the state, recently appointed Mr. Thornton to his fourth term as Utah county drive chairman. Mr. Thornton served as co-chairman for two years before accepting the chairmanship and served on committees for ten 'years before that. The drive for funds with which to alleviate the suffering of polio victims has become an American tradition since its inception by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was himself a victim of the disease. Opens Jan. 14 With the drive set to open across the nation Jan. 14, Mr. Bil lings sounded a plea Saturday for all civic clubs and organizations to aid in the project. He stressed the fact that more funds will be needed this year than in any previous pre-vious year if, the fight against polyomelitis Js to continue. Although Al-though Utah county was almost untouched by the disease during 1948. Utah had 182 cases. Mr. Thornton pointed to California Cali-fornia and the eastern states as the most hard-hit areas for the past year. The greatest number of cases reported to date was in 1916 when 38,000 persons suffered attacks at-tacks of polio. Mr. Thornton said iiiii (: 12 Central Utah Motorists Lose Drivers' Permits Wedding Cake Into Christening Cake ill iTYirirtffcWtWiiWWMt "-,-wub& i SETH BILLINGS that current reports, yet incom plete, may show 1948 to have been a worse year for polio than 1916. .The national foundation was called upon for $200,000 in 1933 when Utah suffered a severe epidemic. Money set aside for aiding chapters and states has been ex hausted under the strain of the sectional epidemics of the past year and quotas are expected to be increased in all districts. Mr Thornton expects that the Provo area will be asked for about $8,000, or 25c per person.
