Show The Best Christmas Ever ( By HELEN JAGGI Honorable Mention Herald Writing Contest Jonnie crept up the front steps, engrossed in the little black ball of fur pestled so snugly under his Jacket away from the cold and snow. MMaybeI can sneak him under my bed," he thought. "Then Mama wouldn't even know I had one. Or even my closet. No she always gets my clothes from there. The basement. No, 1 guess I'd better tell her. She'll find out anyway." With the last thought in mind, Jonnie .pushed the door open. ' When his Mother saw the little dog's head peering out she said, "Jonnie, how many times have I told you not to bring stray dogs home?" "Oh, Mama! This one is different. differ-ent. He's so little; he wouldn't be any trouble at all. I know cause I'd - - -" But his mother ' cut him short with, "No Jonnie. No dogs' ! Besides,' Be-sides,' where did you find hint?" Jonnie didn't answer her, only stroked the dog's head, staring at the floor, she asked again, "Where did you find him?" Then when Jonnie still didn't answer, she asked, "Now Jonnie, he surely belongs to someone, maybe a little boy like you. If you had a dog and someone took him, how would you feel?" ? "But, Mama, I never did have a dog, sd I wouldn't know how I would feel. Anyway, nobody would miss him. Please. Mama, let me keep him. Please!" But his mother only shook her head and, giving him a gentle shove out of the door, said "No, Jonnie! Someone is going to miss him sooner or later. Now hurry and take him back and when you come home, I have a "hJfe surprise for you." Jonnie walked down the street, blinded by tears, not caring how long it would take him to come to the place where he found the dog. "It wouldn't hurt for me to keep you," he said to the dog. "You're so cute. Mama Just don't understand dogs, that's all. It sure is too bad I can't keep you, cause we sure could have fun together. We'd play ball, and I'd teach you to chase balls for me, and you could sleep with me every night. Boy, could we have fun." Jonnit realized they were In Nutcracker Suite Andre Kostelanetz Set MM 714 Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 Set MM 569 CKopiniania Set MM 598 MCAR THtM TOOATI DUiNKLfci S Music Mart 136 West Center, Provo front of the apartment house where he had first seen the dog. He became aware of a man coming com-ing toward him, looking awfully worried. When the man saw Jonnie, he inquired "Hey, Sonny, you haven't seen a little black Cocker Spaniel puppy have you?" Jonnie choked back his sob. and said as bravely as he could, "Yes, mister. I seen him. In fact, I have him right here under my Jacket." Not for the world would Jonnie let the man know he had taken the puppy home. "Thank you, Sonny. The, door of my apartment was left J.open for a minute, Corkey must have gotten out then. Here, take this dollar as a reward for finding and ieturning him to me. What's your name, Sonny? "Jonnie West, but I don't want your money for returning your dog," and with this Jonnie started crying and ran quickly down the f.treet before the man could stop him. When he arrived home, his mother told him his surprise was to decorate the Christmas tree later. After the ? evening meal, his father asked him if he was ready to decorate the tree. Jonnie ans wered, "I don't feel like it Daddy, cause I'm too tired. I couldn't do it very good anyway. Night Mommie, Night Daddy." And with this, he ran up to his bedroom. After that. Jonnie cpuldn't cat, or play, and often late at night his mother heard him crying. Christmas Eve came, and as Jonnie was getting ready for bed, Santa Clause came to see him. Jonnie was excited at first, but when Santa handed him a gun and holster, Jonnie inquired eagerly "Thank you, Santa, but could you please bring me a dog for Christmas? A little black puppy maybe?"' When Santa told him he could n't say, this answer meant to the little boy the same as no. . . Later, the same evening when Jonnie was saying his prayers, he especlaly stressed this part. " . . and please, Dearojod. have Santa Clause bring me a little black puppy." The next morning Jonnie slept late. Even when he woke up, he didn't feel much like going downstairs. While he lay in bed. he though he heard a dog bark, then decided after he had listened listen-ed more closely, he had imagined it. Then he was sure he had heard a bark, he leaped from his bed and, raced madly down stairs As he! ran into the living rodm. his glance fell on a little black ball of fur with a bright red ribbon around his neck. ' "Corkey! Corkey!" and with this, Jonnie scooped the little puppy into his arms. Later, with Corkey still in his arms he inquired, "Where did Santa Clause get Corkey from? He belong to a man who - - -" His mother cut him short b. saying, "Here is a note left by Santa Clause. I'll read it to you. Dear Jonnie, As I was visiting a house on Cherry Lane, a man asked me if I knew a Johnny West? When I told him yes, he asked if I would take him his dbg, as he was living in an apartment and couldn't have a dog, and knew Jonnie would be a nice master. Merry Christmas!
