No matter how corny the entertainment entertain-ment on the screen, a plentiful supply of corn (hot, popped, salted and buttered) assures the popularity of any movie. ., This flat statement on the relationship re-lationship between the art of the cinema and the appetite of the audience comes from unimpeachable unimpeach-able source? and I only hope Mr. Gable, Miss LaMarr and Prof. Ameche read no more of this. They will not be flattered by the facts. When I heard that the theater equipment and supply manufacturers manufac-turers association was assembled here in annual convention, with history's biggest display of movie machinery on tab, I rushed to headquarters. - I'm only sorry I wasn t hungry. A J"r. Jacobson of the Krispy Kist Korn Co., of Chicago, 111., was there- with his french fried korn. The T. and C Co., had a machine which filled a sack with pop corn when a dime was in serted in the slot, plus a number of 100-pound sacks (for immediate immedi-ate delivery) of un popped corn. Among the numerous other corn corporations, with booths spotted among the projector. carpet, and seating displays, was the Pronto Popcorn Co., of Boston, Bos-ton, Mass. It had blizzards of pink and white popcorn (kept at an even temperature of 186 degrees farenheit) sworling behind glass. "No sire, said Muni Ladge, an executive of Pronto, "We do not use pink popcorn in our com mercial operations. Only white.' Ladge was a friendly and I mean this in a complimentary way enthusiastic popcorn pop per. Give him a sack of popcorn and he doesn't much care what's on the screen, or how noisy is the popcorn sack. Popcorn fundamentally is a land commodity and he takes little stock in reports of the silent popcorn bag. Only improvement im-provement in this direction which he approves is the sack with holes punched in it. This pre vents the audience from blowing up its bags and making them go, bang. "Not noiseless," . said Ladge, "Just less noise. But it is an idea of merit when you consider that there is nothing a theater can sell, including tickets, which returns re-turns so "much profit as good crisp popcorn." His. he said, is the crispest of all. It also presumably is the noisiest, but I didn't have the heart to go into that. He was gazing the other way, anyhow, in the direction of a scale model, prefabricated, 500-seat theater, $75,0000 F.O.B., New York City, immediate delivery. Wedding Canceled; Suicide follows WASHINGTON, Sept. 27. (U.R) ; Police tonight listed as suicide the death of an attractive 37- year-old socialite whose sched uled wedding last Tuesday was suddenly called off( by her liance. They said Miss Margaret Elliott El-liott died of an overdose of sleeping sleep-ing tablets after she twice had tried to take her own life by slashing her wrists with a letter opener. Police said Miss Elliott was to have been married Tuesday to Robert Sanders, 39, son of a Washington investment banker. They reported that when she went to the home of the bridegroom's bride-groom's father for the nuptials, Sanders informed her the wedding was off. Miss Elliott became hysterical. A doctor was summoned. He prescribed pre-scribed sleeping tablets to quiet her, .but gave instructions that the tablets were to be kept out of. her reach. Twice she slashed her wrists, police said, then apparently ap-parently found where the sleeping sleep-ing tablets were hidden. The Sanders family discovered the tablets missing Thursday night, and later found Miss Elliott El-liott in a deep slumber. They took her to a hospital where she died early today. It was not explained why Sanders San-ders called off the wedding. SUNDAY HERALD Sunday, Sept. 28, .1947 i 9 Britain To Divert Attention From Their Trobles at Home LONDON, Sept. 7 0U! Gfeat Britain has decided to withdraw her 100,000 troops from Palestine whether the United Nation take over or not, a foreign otfice spokesman said today, and other' sources predicted the evacuation will start within two months. The spokesman said Britain would begin an early withdrawal even if the United Nations failed to reach a settlement in this session ses-sion of the general assembly and postponed the decision to some later meeting. "There will be an early with drawal in the absence of a settlement," settle-ment," the spokesman said. Well-informed Whitehall sources predicted the withdrawal would begin within two . months but the foreign office was more cautious. The spokesman said Britain might agree to remain for one or two months after the present pre-sent assembly ends scheduled for Nov. 16 if the UN set up some new international authority to replace Britain. If the United Nations reaches a settlement acceptable accept-able to both Arabs and Jews, the foreign office spokesman said. Britain wiU begin her' evacuation, and attempt to carry out the solntion alone with reduced forces. If the United Nations' decides to . impose a solution by force of arms, Britain would refuse to. carry it out alone and probably would reduce her forces to the same size as those furnished by other nations. , v The. foreign office emphasized that Britain's decision to give up her mandate and withdraw from Palestine did not mean she 1 leaving the Middle East. British troops, the spokesman said, will remain in Iraq and Cyprus. For the present, he said, they also will remain in the Suez canal zone and in the former Italian colonies in Africa. A large proportion of the Palestine Pales-tine troops probably will be sent back to Britain to work in industry. in-dustry. Others will be distributed among the Mid-East bases and the big new. advance headquarters now under construction in Eafet Africa.
