Running in cold weather and with rain coming down part of the time. Junior college col-lege athletes led the assault on the record books, writing ftfur new marks into meet history. Class A high school speedsters acounted for the other two records. Trackstexs from Branch Agricultural Agri-cultural college were the big guns in the college division. Elden Fullmer, rangy speedster of the Broncos, stepped the 100 yard dash in 10.1 1-5 seconds to erase the old mark of 10.2. set back in . 1927 by Budge of Weber and tied three times since then. Rodney Brown of BAC also erased an old mark that has stood a long time, when he stepped the 880 yard run in 2 minutes 3.3 seconds to top the mark of 2:04.4 set in 1927 by Crosby of Dixie. Don Correy, Don Neeley, Dan Lindsay and Elden Fullmer, Bron- flftn varri rplav nuartet. toured M the distance in 1 minute 32.7 sec onds, which was better than the Old mark of 1:34.4 set by Ricks college back in 1940 and tied by that same school in 1941. - The fourth junior college mark to go by the books was the two mile record. Little Rudy Rogas of Idaho Southern negotiated the eight laps in 10 minutes 45.4 see onds, erasing the mark of 10:49.8 set Jn 1941 by D. Teuscher and, w Havens of Ricks college. Ben Glover, all-state halfback half-back of the state champion Box Elder Bees, proved his track worth by stepping over the Class A high school 200 yard low hurdles in 22.9 seconds, sec-onds, erasing the old mark of 23.3 set by Peterson of Poca- tello in 1929 and tied in 1946. Top performance of the day was turned in by dusky Eddie Con- well, former NYU runner now! performing for Shore A. C. in New Jersey. After four false starts, ConwelL rated as the fastest fast-est starter ever known, roared down the 100 yard straightaway in 9.5 seconds to turn in the fastest fast-est century ever recorded on a Utah track. While Conwell's feat was the most spectacular, it did not detract de-tract too much from the lustre of the performances of the other visiting athletes who were taking part in the special Centennial In vitational events. Wilbur "Moose" Thompson, for mer USC track captain who now performs for the Los Angeles Athletic club, was one of the outstanding stars, tossing the shot 33 feet inch and sailing tne discus 150 feet 4 inches. Thompson was competing acalnst Irvine Klntlsch of NYU, former national AAU champion, in both events. Klntlsch came through with a toss to SO feet S Inches in the hot and whipped the discus out 142 feet 8 inches. The highly publicized mile duel between Leslie MacMitchell, former for-mer NYU ace, and Tommy Quinn. Lake Shore A. C. failed to materialize when MacMitchell. pulled a leg muscle and was forced to drop out of the race. Surprise of the meet, however, was the showing of Clarence Robinson, Rob-inson, BYU sophomore, who turned turn-ed in a fast race to finish behind Quinn in second place. Lloyd LaBeach, Wisconsin university sophomore, turned the tables on Conwell in the 220 yard dash. The Jamaica-born Jamaica-born flash stepped the furlong In 21.4 to nose out Cliff Bour-land, Bour-land, former USC ace and John Wachtler. another ex-Trojan. ex-Trojan. Wachtler however was not to be denied a win, and stepped the Centennial 440 in the respectable time of 49 seconds flat, considerably consider-ably slower than the times he has turned in on the west coast this year. John Montgomery, pole vaulter from Los Angeles Athletic club, barely missed clearing the bar at 14 feet in his three tries, but did go over at 13 feet 6 inches to cop the special Centennial vault. He was pressed for honors by Russell Peck, also of LAAC and Alec Scott of Wisconsin. Bob Seymour, former USC flash, whipped the javelin 215 feet tn Zr , thT ton honors n that(8) and Swift.
