JULY 7. 14 Shaw, Mosley Ridicule Wells' Charges Against Royal House SUNDAY HERALD.fi fwrnnr Praise New Type Engine BY CHARLES HALLINAN United Press Staff Correspondent LONDON, July 6 (U.fft George Bernard Shaw and Sir Oswald Mosley, British fascist leader, tonight to-night were in agreement on one subject for probably the first time in their lives. Both snorted: "Nonsense!" at H. G.-Wells' demand for an investigation in-vestigation of what the famous Drought Becoming Severe In Utah SALT LAKE CITY. July tJ (U.R) Central and northern parts of Utah are being affected by lack of rain, according to M. T. Wilson of the water resources branch of the U. S. geological survey. For the second consecutive month, drought conditions continue con-tinue in southern and eastern parts of the state, Wilson said. Total water resources, however, Wilson said, were generally satisfactory, satis-factory, despite the drought conditions. Sale of Liquor By Drink Issue Fails to Qualify SALT LAKE CITY. July 6 OI.R The plan by several civic groups to place the issue of sale by the drink before Utah voters in the next general election was dead today, after Secretary of State E. E. Monson said petitions circulated fell short of the 25,000 required by statute to place an amendment on the ballot. John A. Boggs, chairman of the citizens' league, said today that 38.000 signatures had been obtained ob-tained but the certified number was too low to merit counting. Boees explained that many for mer servicemen were disqualified because they hadn't voted m the last election and others signed in counties where they were not registered. Utah Wing Awaits New CAP Charter SALT LAKE CITY, July 6 (U.R) All that awaits the plans for expansion of the Utah wing of the civil air patrol charter is President Truman's signature, according ac-cording to Joe Bergin, wing commander, com-mander, who has been promoted to full colonel. The Utah wing will be able to obtain planes and other education equipment from the war assets administration and will be able to obtain funds more easily under its consolidation with the army air forces, according to Bergin. author called "rumors" that the British royal family had con tributed funds toward Mosley's pre-war fascist blackshirts. Shaw who is two weeks shy of his 90th birthday was asked to comment on the 80-year-old Wells' demand. "Nonsense!" Shaw sputtered. Mosley had the same response. He called it "absolute nonsense." and added that the charge was "utterly fantastic." "The royal family never, involves in-volves itself inany controversy," he said. "No member of the royal family has ever contributed or been asked to contribute to my group." He said that he was a staunch royalist and that "all parties here are royalist except possibly the communists." Mosley claimed that he had "dealt completely with this matter mat-ter of my organization's funds in my book, 'My Answer'." The government recently made public a disclosure that Benito Mussolini contributed at least $250,000 to Mosley. However, Mosley claimed that his book would have " complete answer to the ridiculous rumor mentioned by Wells as well as other nonsensical charges." Wells' attack on the monarchy was not generally published by the British press, appearing only in the socialist "New Leader." Douglas Rogers, 26, editor of the publication which is the organ or-gan of the independent labor party, said that he did not plan to carry on a campaign for the abolition of the British royal house. "Wells," he said, "has been anti-monarchist anti-monarchist for half a century. And that, of course, agrees with the policy of our periodical." SALT LAKE CITY, July 6 (U.R) Gov. Herbert B. Maw predicted pre-dicted a brilliant future today for a new type of internal combustion engine developed by James A. Hardman of Logan. Maw, after witnessing a demon stration of the model which was built with the aid of $13,900 in state department of publicity and industrial development funds, said the power of the new model was "amazing. MoreGI Homes For Rent Aim Of Expediter WASHINGTON, July 6 (U.R) Though rent ceilings on GI homes are in jeopardy, housing expe diter Wilson W. Wyatt announced today he will press for construction construc-tion of more homes for rent rather rath-er than sale. At the same time he called for restoration of OPA rent and price controls Without these, he warned, warn-ed, "the veteran wduld find that low rent houses and apartments don't exist." Wyatt said surveys show that 50 per cent of home-seeking veterans vet-erans want to rent rather than buy. But fewer than one-third of the permanent new homes started in May were to be held for rent Wyatt's announcement came as he awaited a congressional rul ing on whether his power to fix maximum rents on priority-built veterans homes was inadvertent ly shattered by a restrictive amendment to the second war powers act. Sen. E. H. Moore, R., Okla., said he drafted the amendment to prevent transfer of OPA's powers to some other agency, in event of OPA's death. It forbids other agencies to fix rents or commodity prices. Though Moore said he did not intend to curtail Wyatt's powers under the veterans emergency housing act, Wyatt's lawyers fear his rental authority may have been wiped out Heretofore he has fixed maximum rents at $80, with some much lower.
