One of Provo's first school houses once stood on the same site. - The old building waa remodeled by the ward and served the town for many years as the , First .ward Social hall. . ; 7 The first meeting called to discuss dis-cuss the proposition of erecting a new chapel and recreation hall was held on Now 17,; 1926, just a few months after Bishop Whitehead White-head had been set apart as bishop of the ward. A year was spent in investigation of L D. S. chapel designs and laying the groundwork ground-work for 'the project. ; "The site" was . dedicated for building purposes pur-poses by President T. N. Taylor on December 18, 1927, . and the cornerstone : was ' laid by ? Bishop Whitehead on May 6, 1928. The outstanding characteristic of the , edifice is ; the "airplane design," de-sign," consisting of two wings, the chapel on the west and . the recre ation hall on the east. Connect ing the two is a -circular rotunda into which all other rooms and two stairways lead. Also on the ground floor is the . efficiently equipped kitchen from which many banquets are served, and the Re lief Society rooms. ' Class-Rooms - - ' On the ; second: floor' are the class rooms, forming the Vtail" of the airplane. . The heating plant and dressing rooms for the staee are in the basement. A , unique reature of the building is the fact that every room is touched by the sun some time during the day. The chapel of typical church interior in-terior design, seats 450 and is equipped with massive oak pews.. In the front, back of the pulpit and the choir seats, is room provided pro-vided for a pipe organ to .be installed in-stalled at a later date. The recreational hall fills a popular need and is used frequently frequent-ly for wedding receptions, banquets and dances. .
