Many senators, generally sympathetic sym-pathetic , with the idea of loosening loosen-ing the now. rigid neutrality law, hesitate to give that discretion to the, state department as it la now organized. They believe that before be-fore Mr. Hull's career boys get more power, they should first show that they deserve it. - I - - I SNOBBISH ISOLATION Basic trouble with the state department de-partment goes back to two things: (1) lack of money; (2) isolation from . the U. S. A. some people call it snobbishness. . The constant wail of the career men themselves is against the isolationist iso-lationist tactics of Hiram John-sqn, John-sqn, William E. Borah and other western senators. They claim that the United States, no longer cah remain cut off from the world, in the isolation of its earlier days. ' In this,' Mr. Hull's boys may be right. . But they, , in turn, commit the aajne sin. They live in virtual isolation from their fellow, men. The career diplomat who has soiled his hands with manual labor, or rubbed shoulders with the. great mass of the American people, is as rare as an anti-Hitler Nazi. ; Equaliy rare is the U. S. diplomat diplo-mat who knows the Middle West. Some of them were born there, .but left ' after diaper age and have been too busy touring foreign capi tals to return and tap sentiment in that great cradle of American isolation the Mississippi valley. Moreover, all the high officials of the state department, except for Mr. Hun himself, were born, bred and reared on the Atlantic seaboard. sea-board. - I EASTERN MONOPOLY Calling the role of the state department's de-partment's top-notich executives. Why this should be so, only Cbrdell Hull and the inner diplomatic circle knows. With billions bil-lions being spent for relief, rear mament and agriculture, a few extra millions might be spent on the branch of the government charged with keeping the nation out of war. Instead, the state department is receiving only $17,000,000, compared com-pared with $553,000,000 for the army and $616,000,000 for the navy. And of that $17,000,000, the sate department raises $4,-000,000 $4,-000,000 Itself in consular and passport pass-port fees. In fact while every other government gov-ernment department has been reaching its hand into The treasury, treas-ury, the state department actually is getting $2,000,000 less than it did in Hoover's dav, when its 1932 budget was $19,000,000. Only reason the state department depart-ment is -not getting more is because be-cause it is not asking for it. Cor- Yes sir!
