S., Dec. 18 (American wire) Six hundred widows and cripples here today discussed the world war's most horrible disaster, which occurred, just 10 years ago. They are still dependents because of the Hall-fax Hall-fax tragedy. For, strange as it seems, the war's greatest single blast, in which 1635 persona were killed and 6000 injured, happened not in Europe, but in North America, in this quiet little fishing city. Loaded With TNT It was the morning of December Decem-ber 6; 1917, that the Norwegian freighter Imo and the French ship Mont Blanc collided in the Narrows Nar-rows at Halifax harbor. The Mont Blanc was loaded with TNT, made by American munitions muni-tions factories and bound for France. Her sailors sensed what was happening and abandoned the ship, racing for shore and then for the nearby hills, after sounding an alarm in the city. The alarm did no good. A grea.1 explosion shook the city a few minutes later. School children, just arrived at school, were killed by the hundreds. Men and women died in crumbling homes, stores and offices. Six hundred persons were so completely destroyed by the blast that their bodies were never recognized. 10,000 Homes Destroyed Eleven steamers, including the Imo, were driven ashore and wrecked by the blast, with great loss of life. The Mont Blanc disappeared dis-appeared in a cloud of shrapnel, LEGAL NOTICES I Probate and Guardianship 1 Notices i Consult County Cierk or the I Respective Signers for Further 1 Information. There followed a period of reconstruction re-construction with thousands of new homes built for the homeless. home-less. Today there are few signs of the explosion in Halifax, but it will never be forgotetn, for there is no home which did not lose relative or friend in the blast, the war's greatest explosion, which took place across the world from the main theater of war. Halifax doesn't like to think of-war of-war these days, for the city realizes real-izes that its tragedy, bringing death impartially to the young and old, and to men and women, is much like death which another great war would bring to. the cities of the earth.
