Jan. 26 (Special to the Herald i Led by the brilliant Kent Ryan, husky forward, the Aggies turned the tables on the Cougars Saturday night, winning handily by a score of 41 to 27, thus gaining a split in the first home series of the basketball season. It was the first loss in six starts for the Cougars who had swept the first two series at Provo against T'tah university and the Montana Bobcats. The Cougars won the opening game here Friday' night in a near-raising finish, 39 to 38. The Aggies presented a determined de-termined front Saturday night and once they got going stayed out far in front of the Cougars. At the intermission the Aggies were ahead 30 to 14. With Watson getting get-ting the tip-off consistently over Hugh Cannon, the Aggies had control con-trol of the ball the; biggest part of the time. Parsing swiftly and with precision, Dick Romney's team converted a good percentage of their shots at the noop to keep a margin of from 10 to 15 points ahead of the Provo team all the way. Ryaji High Point Man Ryan besides playing a stellar f)oor game was high point man of the game with 14 markers. He teamed beautifully with Petty who counted 11. Watpn, discarding the guard' to protect his fractured nose, played a whale of a game. "Red" Wade, leaving the scoring duties tc his teammates, stayed close to Crowton who was held to 8 points, high man for the loseis. Wade went out on personals in the second half. The Cougars were unquestionably unquestion-ably rtff their game after Friday's hectic encounter, passing erratically erratic-ally and missing easy shots frequently fre-quently Cannon who played a brilliant game Friday night, gam- ering high point scoring honors, eouldn't get going and failed to score. He was ejected near the 'close of the game when he became too critical of the officiating. Earl Giles who started at forward for-ward with Crowton, gave way to Harlow Turpin later in the game. Neither was able to convert more than one field goal apiece. Giles returned later in the game to replace re-place Hugh Cannon at center. Captain Cap-tain Jav Whitman and Millet started at guard and acquitted themselves well in the face of defeat as did Brooks who replaced Millet. The reserves on both teams had their innings late in the game when both coaches relieved the regulars. LOGAN - Spectators lay back in their seats panting, soaked with perspiration and limp as spaghetti Friday night following one of the most hair-raising games in the history of the Smart gymnasium when an oak-hearted Brighani Young university hoop five tripped trip-ped a favored Utah Aggie team 39 to 38. The victory was earned only after the most spirited of rallies m both the first and iast half. The Aggies led at one time m the first half b 11 points. The score was tied at 37-all with nearly four minutes to go when Ralph Crowton coolly flipped the ball through the strings from the center of the floor to push the "Y" score to 39 Three minutes re mained and although the Aggies j had possession of the ball most of ' the time they could riot penetrate j the pugnacious Cougar defense and 1 registered only one more point '. when Kent Ryar. scored a foul ! toss. ' Aggies Open Fast The Aggies were playing an amazing brand of ball at the be- j ginning of the game, rustling like ; the ball hawks they are and working work-ing in for shots. But the Cougars were non-plussed. They fought back viciously, closed the gap to 23-21 in the Aggies' favor at half- i time, then forged ahead midway in the second half. Ed Wade, giant Aggie guard. played a splendid game, scoring 11 points to the 12 made by the' Cougar forward, Ralph Crowton. i Hugh Cannon. "Y" center, was high point man of the game with i3 points, one more than Crowton. Wade led the Aggie scorers. Wallv Brooks and Gus Black i finished i tne y' the game at guards for after both Wavne Millet and Captain Jay Whitman went out on personals. When the fire was the hottest in the first half Whitman was the main cog m the comeback of the Cougars He intercepted the ball frequently and fairly "stole" it from opponents in his hemic at- i tempt to turn the tide His passing I was also of a high order. Swede Lawson let out a bellow bel-low that coula be heaid as far south as Sandy, Saturday in Salt Lake City when he demanded that a new ami capable referee be used Monday at Park Rw-Shc when he meets Wildcat McCann in a return re-turn bout that has Utah county sport fans agog. Swede declared emphatically that he did not want Henry Jones to referee and added that he would have pinned McCann in their last bout but Jones favored the little mat demo;., the well known Wildcat Wild-cat Mc Cam; denied Lawson's charges and maintained that if any favors were given Lawson got them. In fact. Lawson grumbled that he didn't like any of the third men he had had referee for him so far and absolutely demanded . a new one. Look For Referee At any rate, the promoters were looking for a referee Saturday, and one that, like Jones, would be able to take care of himself. Be-i Be-i cause you can never tell what will : hagpen to a referee when McCann I and Lawson get together in the ring. i Jones would be unable to referee the bout anyway, inasmuch as he I has a tough assignment of his j own to handle. He will take on i the formidable Jack Brentano, ; Canadian welterweight champion, ' in the semi-windup. This bout ! should be a thriller that will di-! di-! vide attention with the McCann-i McCann-i Lawson battle. Attempts were being made Sat-, Sat-, urday to line up a suitable op-! op-! ponent for Bert Davis, Salem light heavyweight fighter. The search had narrowed down to two bv Saturday, with either Gene 1 Payne of Heber City, or a Salt Lake City slugger set to go in with j Davis. In another preliminary boxing encounter Alfred Pederson of Pro-i Pro-i vo will go on with Homer Cooms, ! Springville.' Brentano arrived in Provo Fri-i Fri-i day afternoon und appeared to be ! in good shape for his go with ! Jones. TODAY-MONDAY TODAY-MONDAY and TUESDAY - JACKIE COOPER PROVD DOWNS LINCOLN, 47-22 Daniels, Provo Forward, Leads Bulldogs to Victory Over Tig-ers. The first quarter ended 8 to 6 for Provo, was a hard-fought affair. af-fair. After the Bulldog plays started to click in the second half, Provo, led by Daniels, clever forward, for-ward, ran the score up to 27 to 12 at half-time. Lincoln braced early in the second sec-ond half and cut Provo's lead down to 10 points with the score 29 to 19 midway in the third quarter.
