RALLY FALLS SHORT SAIT LAKE University of Southern California's basketball oquad is headed homeward today after having taken the measure 01 the U. Y. U. Cougars 36-33 in an up-and-down game at the Deseret gym Friday night. The Cougars put on a burst ol speed in the waning moments that tied the score at . 31-31 uut the Trojans trumped this with a rally of then-own then-own that gave them the game with a minute" to- go. ' 5 The rough but speedy " Trojans led 19-lJat-the half and with their defense working overtime seemed to-have the "Y" team effectively bottled up. But they reckoned without the long-distance shooting shoot-ing of the team from Provo. With the second half but a minute min-ute old Captain Jay Whitman of the Cougars, who was the standout of the game, intercepted a Trojan pass and clattered in for a set-up. Holbrook and Guttero of the U. S. C. team scored then Ielson flung in a one-handed shot and Whitman and Hunter followed with a long one each before Holbrook scored again. "Rubber Legs" Guttero took a beautiful pass lo convert a close one and Joe Johnson made another an-other just like it after some nifty passing at the "Y" basket. Nelson brought the score to 27-31 with a free throw then and Jay Whitman j raised the fans to their feet with a swisher from the middle of ' the floor. After a scramble under the basket Nelson tied the score by tipping one in. Kelly Breaks Tie Joe Kelly harpooned the "Y" chances, however, when he tanked a beauty from the center line and put the game on ice with a" foul toss. Guttero cinched matters with a tip-in basket but loul tosses "by Whitman and Giles, who was inserted in-serted for Nelson a moment before, be-fore, gave the Trojans their three-point three-point margin. B. Y. U. did ot exhibit the defense de-fense that was showm b" the Trojans, Tro-jans, who went almost to any length to stop shots. The boys played mighty close, but '-effectively. Thf Cougars got more shots than the Californians . but had wretched luck in converting, doing do-ing better on long shots than those , within the foul line. For U. S. C. Guttero played a great game, as did -Holbrook, Kelly and Findlayf Whitman's 13 points brought him nigh-point .honors. The remainder of the BOOSTERS TOO GOOD FORUTES SALT LAKE Ogden Boosters made it two in a row Friday night it the Deseret gymnasium when they scored an impressive 52-37 victory over University of Utah. They defeated B. Y. U. Thursday night, 36-26. Passing with an effortless skill and taking advantage of Joe Fortenbrrry's command of the tip-off ,the Boosters took a 22-6 ' lead c before Utah put on a little offense of their own. Bill Kinner, center, alortg with Onan Mechim and Sid Kramer, guards, bombed the basket at long range for Utah and led a rally that brought them to lg-26 at the half. Utah's rally came after Melvin Miller and McBuiney had given way to Comer and Captain Callahan. Effective Guards Utah's husky guards turned in some fine performances at times but, Kramer found it impossible to sfop Miller's scoring when the aincy-ball handler went under the basket for shots. In the last period of the second half, with Utah only a short way behind. Miller replaced replac-ed Fortenberry at center, and became be-came the pivot in the "pivot wheel" offense, scoring effectively. His spectacular ball-handling pleased the crowd. Colvin did some fine guarding for the Boosters. Bill Kinner again Was the scoring punch for the Utes. "Y7 team showed flashes of real brilliance through the game and did some fast work in intercepting passes. B. Y. U. G. T. F. P.
