NEA SERVICE INCJ CHAPTER XXXIX qpiIE sirl in the gold chair turned toward the door of the 'dressing room expectantly. She was wearing a beige suit trimmed with huge rings of fur at the shoulders. On her head was a becoming be-coming little hat of the same color. col-or. Her shoes, gloves and hand bag were of identical hue. As she looked at Sheila she. smiled in recognition. Sheila returned re-turned the smile hesitantly. Should she speak to this girl who looked so familiar? Who was Bhe? Sheila knew Bhe had seen her and talked with her some "where. But where? Who could she be? Nodding slightly, still smiling. Sheila walked to the far end of the room where Henri, resplendent resplen-dent in striped trousers, morning coat and gardenia, was whisking about, rubbing his hands together to-gether and beaming. He was a Tastly different Henri now than when Sheila had met him an hour earlier. She smiled at the thought. She herself, changing from her own Inexpensive frock to this costly model, appeared to he a different person, too. ' As she passed Henri she glanced at him and he bowed just as he would have bowed to a valued customer. She was amused but took her cue from that. She was to walk about, to sit down, In .quire about prices and fabrics and appear to be one of the shop- vpers. Without conceit Sheila knew that no one in the room was bet ter dressed than herself. Henri had seen to that. He had selected a costume for her that was exact ly right to bring out her excellent coloring, the perfection of her fig-.jire. fig-.jire. . She walked easily and gracefully. graceful-ly. That was duo to her years of .'training as a dancer. Sheila car-tried car-tried herself beautifully erect. 'She moved about the room, then sank into a chair. Henri nodded 'Slightly in approval. ("PRESENTLY he came toward her. They think yon are a client like themselves. them-selves. Yes, my dear. It helps." "Shall I talk to anyone?" asked Sheila as Henri prepared to move away. "Of course. If anyone asks questions yon can say Henri made your frock so long as you do it without seeming to Introduce the subject. That's the Idea. Yon're doing fine." He moved away and as he did so the girl In beige approached. "You don't remember me, do you?" she said. "Mind If I sit down?" She opened her purse and drew out a Jeweled cigaret case. "Will you Join me?" she asked. As Stiella shook her head the other girl laughed easily. "You haven't been here before? Henri doesn't mind so long as you don't burn holes In his mauve carpet. Of course I know you're Sheila Shayno but you don't know me, do you?" "I'm afraid I don't. You see, I meet so many people " "Oh. of course. Well, I didn't expect ybu would. I'm Dorothy Trevor. Dick Stanley's cousin Trevor Lane's cousin, too. Oh - I'll bet Trevor got you this Job, didn't he?" "You know I'm working here?" Sheila asked. Dorothy laughed. "Of course You're much too good-looking to be doing anything else. I didn't think yon bought your clothes here because I kneW who you were." She colored . and went on aulckly. "I mean actresses don't shop here as a rule. Don't mis understand me! Henri is too ex pensive for anyone who knows the value of money." CHE lighted the cigaret and re garded Sheila. "I hope I don't seem terribly rude but I'm real ly interested in you. Ever since I saw you dance that night at Tre vor's " "As a matter of fact I sang,' Sheila said quietly. She recog nized the girl now. She was one of the cousins from boarding school for whom Lane had given the party. "Indeed you did!" the girl re plied without embarrassment. "But you danced with Dick after ward. And I saw you several times dancing at the Club Volens last summer. I think you're wonderful!" won-derful!" Sheila could not help liking this girl. The admiration in her eyes and tone were not feigned. She could not have been more than 18 in spite of her veneer of sophistication. "I can't be very good or I'd have a Job now," Sheila replied modestly. The other girl's eyes widened. "But this is a Job, Isn't it? I'd love to wear all these pretty frocks and walk around and listen lis-ten to Henri rave! I'll bet he can rave, too!" "Oh, he's all right." "Well, I suppose he's no worse than the stage managers." He can't say much. He's so busy he doesn't know what's going on any more. He did say, though, , it would be a crime for anyone to let me have a Job ! Dick doesn't "seem to think I'm very useful. You couldnt get me In here, could you? I d love it!" THEY were Interrupted by a boy vrlfti o mst9PA fnr Miss Tre- or. "Mr, Stanley would Jlke to speak to you on the telephone," the boy told her. Dorothy turned toward Sheila. "It's Dick," she said. "I was to meet him for lunch!" Impulsively she put a hand on Sheila's arm. "Listen, you'll have to eat somewhere. some-where. Why don't you Join us? I'll send word to Dick to pick us up here. He'll love It. Henri'll let you go, won't he? ITTasirlrlm myself!" "Oh, I couldn't " Sheila began be-gan but the other Interrupted. "Of course you can. Please!" "Well if it's all right." Dorothy rose. "Then that's settled," set-tled," she said. "I'll talk to Dick right now and tell him." She sped in the direction of the telephones. tele-phones. Sheila, left alone, thought that the reason this girl was so cordial was because of the glamour associated, asso-ciated, with stage life. That was why Dorothy Trevor had invited her to lunch. She would enjoy being seen with a girl who had been the featured dancer In stage productions, an entertainer in one of the best night clubs. It would be something to tell her friends later. Hundreds of other people seemed to feel the saime way. Sheila reflected that once she had talked about' this matter with a well known star. "Don't let it bother you," the older woman had said. "It's simply sim-ply the way things are. After all, on the stage we try to bring glamour Into the lives of the members of our audience. They live through the roles we play and they see us in those parts not as human beings like themselves." them-selves." That was It. An actress was supposed to be "different." That was why Jerry had hurt her so cruelly. He didn't think anyone would expect him to be Sincere with a girl on the stage as with other girls. That was why Dorothy Doro-thy was excited by the prospect of going to lunch with her. Well, she would lunch with Dorothy and Dick. Suddenly it occurred to Sheila that, of all the men and women whom she knew, Dick Stanley did care for her for herself alone. Cared for her? More than that, Dick loved her. Why couldn't she care for Dick as she did for Jerry? Sheila thought mournfully that everything every-thing in the world seemed sadly mixed up. (To Be Continued) T ,i 09 Vtt VYVE.
