Sitting Atop the World With Jim Marshall No, We Aren't Socialists This newspaper has pointed out, on several occasions, . the need for a more equitable distribution of national in- - come. . The producers of wealth, we have maintained, should receive a larger share in the profits of production. A reader, mistaking our stand, writes to ask if what we advocate isn't socialism, or something very much like so- - - clalism. We are glad to clear up the false impression of this reader, or of anybody else who doesn't understand the Her-. Her-. aid's fundamental economic views. At present, in this nation, less than 10 per cent of the - population gets, annually, more than half of our national . income. We hold that this is an unhealthy condition; that under it business cannot thrive, because the workers, who do the ' work of production, are unable to consume even half of what this nation produces. Hence, over-production and unemployment un-employment hunger in the midst of plenty. We don't believe, as the Socialists do,-that matters would be improved by dividing up all the .existing wealth . equally. All such plans, as practiced by the Soviets, Socialists v. and Communists, are basically unfair. They make it possi-; possi-; bleior the slackers and non-producers to take an unjust portion por-tion of goods from those who actually do the real work. . - . We do believe, that if every man who works received a larger share of what he himself produces, everybody would be better off. j This would not prevent anybody, who is willing to work, from making a big income, according to his ability. There - is no reason why any man who is able to make a large in-'.. in-'.. come shouldn't make as much as he can, provided those who : work for him receive their just share of what is produced by their efforts and co-operation. This is very different from the socialistic proposal to level all income and do away with individual initiative and private ownership of property. When Christmas Means Something Christmas comes every year, but there was never a time when the spirit of the day was more welcome than it is now in 1932. Today, with millions hungry, with disillusionment and fear of the future everywhere, mankind appreciates the - coming of the day when selfishness and wordly matters are v forgotten. . : , - . Did you ever make a plan for your life and figure tfcat this year you'd do thus and so and next year you'd save so much and that the , year after that you'd . . . and did you ever have the plan come out right for you? in our younger days we used to plan and dream and figure out a course but somehow or oUer Fate always stepped In and the plans never came out right and so Just to avoid the bitter beer of disappointment we stopped stop-ped scheming fi flfr But we notice the lads and lassies are still making money doping out plans for .America and selling sell-ing them to the magazines you can hardly pick up a magazine without running into some new scheme and there must be at least a score of well-financed national organizations each with a pet plan it is trying to put over so that we will all havefive garages for every car andJbecf on Sundays or else 90 minutes' work each alternate Friday and no more wars 4 fi AH these schemes sound very well but did you ever go back thru tiie rather thrilling history of the repulf.ic and count the endless end-less schemes that have come to nothing much? Occasionally I get a letter from a reader out there in the rcrt-less rcrt-less world that delights me because it is an indication to me that I have not been hammering away all these ycara for merely my personal per-sonal zest of expression.
