"And because she was more refined re-fined than the average young woman In musical comedy' than the average chorus girl, to put it simply," Dundee took him up. "you co-operated with Mrs. Dunlap to Introduce her to your most intimate friends Including your wife?" 6ft 0H- Hugol Why didn't you tell me?" Karen Marshall walled. "You see. sir, what you are doing!" do-ing!" Judge Marshall stormed. "I am truly sorry if I have distressed dis-tressed you. Mrs. Marshall." Dundee Dun-dee protested sincerely. "But " He shrugged and turned again to the husband: "I understand you were Mrs. Selim's landlord. . . . May I ask how much rent she paid?" "The house rents for $100 a month furnished." "And did Mrs. Sellm pay her rent promptly?" Dundee persisted. "Since 'this Is the 24th of . May. sir, Mrs. Selim's rent for June was not yet due." Not before poor little Karen could Dundee force himself to ask what. Inevitably, would have been his next question one which could not have been evaded, as the ex-judge bad evaded the other two ques tions: "It it not true. Judge Man thall, that Nita Leigh 8 dim, paid you no rent at allt" But there were other ways to find out. ... "Look here, Dundee!" a brusque voice challenged, and. the detectlvaJ whirled to face Polly Beale. It was like her, be thought with a slight grin, to address him as one man to another. . . . "Yes, Miss Beale?" "I'm no fool, and I don't think any of my friends here are either though two or three of them have acteTlike It today." the masculine- looking girl stated flatly. "You've made It very plain that any one of us here, except Che Sprague man, could hare stolen Hugo's gun and silencer. ... Has the gun been found?" "It has not, Miss Beale." "O. K.!" The queer girl snapped her fingers. "I move that you or Captain Strawn search the men tor the weapon, and that I search the women Wait!" she com manded harshly to a flurry of femi nine protests. "I'll ask you, Dundee; Dun-dee; to search me first yourself. 1 believe the technical term Is frisk ing,' Isn't It? . . . Then 'frisk me. . . Here is my hand bag. (HE) Artifice and camouflage are playing play-ing an important part in the erection erec-tion of the Arlington Memorial bridge which is nearimj completion here. This graceful structure con-tsins con-tsins a double bascule draw span. Other bridges with bascule' draws are admittedly not beautiful. In the past, bascule spans have not been designed along the massive graceful grace-ful lines' of this bridge. But in it, it is difficult to tell the hollow span made of steel beams anct girders from -the other spans of concrete and granite. When one leaf of the draw is lifted it presents a barrier to the automobile driver nearly 100 feet wide and more than 100 feet high. So well is it balanced by counterweights counter-weights that it is raised and lowered low-ered with a 50 horsepower electric motor. ' ' It was out of the question to use on so beautiful a bridge the Visual gate for haling traffic before opening open-ing the span so an invisible method was devised. When the draw is to be opened, warning lights will flash, bells will sound and spikes carrying red lights on their tops will riso through the floor to stop cars at a safe distance. Judge Marshall and Dexter Sprague permitted Captain Strawn and Sergeant Ser-geant Turner to "frisk" them. "How about the guest closet and the cars?" Dundee asked of Strawn In a low voice when the fruitless, unpleasant task, was finished. "Gone over with a fine tooth comb long ago," Strawn assured him gloomily. "And not a biding place In or outside the house that the boys haven't poked into including includ-ing the meadow as far as anyone could throw from the bedroom windows." win-dows." The women were filing back Into the room, some pale, some flushed, but all able to look each other In the eye again. With surprising jauntlness Polly Beale saluted Dundee. "Nothing more deadly on any of us than Flora's triple-deck compact" I thank you with all my heart Miss Beale." Dundee said sincerely. "And now I think you may all go to your homes. ... Of course you understand," he interrupted a chorus of relieved ejaculations, "that all of you will be wanted for the inquest, which will probably be held Monday." "And what's more." Captain Strawn cut In, to show his authority, author-ity, "I want all of you to hold yourselves your-selves ready for further questioning at any time." There was a stampede for coats and hats, a rush for cars as If the house were on fire, or Dundee reflected re-flected wryly as if those he had tortured were afraid he would change his mind. Rushing away with hatred of him in their hearts. Only Penny Crain held back. maneuvering for a chance to speak with him. "I don't have to go with the rest, do I?" she begged in a husky whis per. . "And why not?" Dundee grinned at her. "I'm attached to the district at- torney's office, too, aren't I?" "Right! And you're been a brick this evening. Her brown syes widened, filled with terror. "Stop thinking" one of us did it! Stop. I tell you!" "Can you stop. Penny?" he asked gently. TUT she fled from him, sobbing IJ wildly for the firBt time that long, horrible evening. Dundee, watching from the doorway of the lighted ball, saw the chauffeur open the rear door of the Dunlap limousine, limou-sine, saw Penny, catapult herself into Lois Dunlap'a outstretched arms. ... -.."When did the Dunlap chauffeur call for his mistress?" he asked Strawn, who stood beside him. "About 10 minutes after you ar-? rived." Strawn answered wearily. "Said he'd dropped Mrs. Dunlap and the Selim woman at about 2:30 and had been ordered to return around 6:30. . . . Knows nothing. of course." The chief of the homicide homi-cide squad drew a deep breath. "Well, Bonnie, he has nothing on me. In spite of all the palaver I don't know nothing either." You need some dinner, chief," Dundee suggested. "And the boys must be getting hungry, too." Somebody's got to guard the house, I suppose," Strawn gloomed. Not that it will do any good. . . . And what about that maid that Carr woman? Shall I lock her up on general principles?" "No. I want to have another talk with her, and if she bucks at spending spend-ing the night here. I'M take her to the Rhodes House, and turn her over to my old friend. Mother' Rhodes. We haven't anything on her, you know." "No, nor on anybody else, except that old fool, Marshall, and we can't clap him . into Jail yet," Strawn agreed, his gray eyes wink log. "Take your crew on in, chief," Dundee urged. "I'lK stick till midnight mid-night or longer, If you don't mind. You can arrange to have a couple of the boys relieve me about 12. . . . And by the way,' will you telephone tele-phone me the minute you get hold of Ralph Hammond?" "Well, maybe not so quick as all that," Strawn drawled. "I'll take the first crack at that baby, my lad! Not so dumb, am' I, Bonnie-boy? Bonnie-boy? Not so dumb! I can put two and two together as 'well as the next one pretty near as well as the district attorney's new 'special investigator.' " (To Be Continued) i : Henderson is charged with the theft of more than $300 in cash and currency from the Western States Grocery company. The money was hidden in a secluded part of the warehouse by Ariel Smith, manager or the company. Henderson confessed to Chief Otto Birk that he entej-ed the store through a side window and took the money. Are the young people of today using us-ing better judgment in selecting mates than did their ancestors? A third of the marriages of the nation are failures. A school of Jove, to explain the physiological and psychological facts of courtship and home making mak-ing is planned in Denver, Colo. Here are the views of two experts: ex-perts: Dr. Duren J. H. Ward, psychologist: psycholo-gist: The need for such an institution is great. Boys and girls should be instructed in matters of sex and psychology before -they have become be-come infatuated with the wrong persons. They ought to be taught, in the common schools, applicable principles prin-ciples of psychology and physiology but the teachers are not trained to do it: And the church doesn't know the problems. I look forward to the time when instructive institutions of this sort will be established thruout the country. They must be licensed and operated by experts. Now we license doctors, but won't let them tell the public anything. Mrs. Mary E. Holland, secretary Children's Aid society: I don't see how science can be used to direct marital destiny. The physical note is dominant in a eugenic clinic. Love, establishment of a home, birth and upbringing of children, all lose their beauty and become animal-like. I don't see how such a project could be really successful or desirable. de-sirable. " Young people of today are choosing choos-ing their husbands and wives with wide-open eyes. They make mistakes, mis-takes, but I don't think they make as many as in past generations; because be-cause they dissolve- unhappy partnerships part-nerships the mistakes come to the surface. This West of Ours ! Its Romantic History I R. A. Zeller, supervisor of Ihe TongaSa national forest, Alaska, was making a survey of Baranof island when he encountered two huge brown bears. .The brush was up to his shoulders, should-ers, handicapping his movements. The bears started at him. The treej were too small to climb. Zeller saw a small clearing a few feet away and raced for it, with the bears after him. As he stepped into the clearing, one bear reared up, mouth gaping and paws waving. " Zeller waited a second and fired. The bear fell, but regained its feet Immediately and charged on. It was. .so" close Zeller could feel its hot breath. Then it toppled and fell down the slope. Zeller had been afraid to fire a second) time, thinking the other bear soon would join the attack, but it failed to appear. Cautiously the forester followed the wounded animal. As it roared and tumbled down the mountain side it clawed up great chunks of earth and bushes, and its teeth marks showed on small trees. Far down the slope the body was found. It weighed 900 pounds.
