BY W1NTHKOP LYLN I'nited Press Staff Corresjondeiit MADISON. Wis., Feb. 6 r.i: Investigation of Wisconsin's athletic ath-letic mess is expected to reach a dramatic climax today in the modestly furnished office of Dr. Glenn Frank. the university's erudite president. A special committee of the board of regents, headed by Harold Har-old M. Wilkie. Madison attorney, will delve for the last time into condition which may result in the firing of both Dr. Walter E. Meanwell, athletic director, and Dr. Clarence W. Spears, head football foot-ball coach. To the principals, fighting to retain their jobs and justify their past actions, the situation is far from comical. But to outsiders, who have watched Wisconsin survive sur-vive other apparent attacks of growing pains, the case has its humorous aspects. Disinterested spectators hive found it hard, for instance, to become alarmed over charges that Wisconsin football players were given free liquor during the 1935 season. The liquor, ostensibly, was to instill the boys with a fighting spirit which would carry the Cardinals Car-dinals to gridiron glory. The boys won only one game, however, their homecoming contest with Purdue. Bill Fallon, trainer of the team and one of those called for today's hearing, has signed an affidavit saying Dr. Spears ordered him to slip a jolt of whisky in the players' coffee before each important contest. con-test. MeanwoJl, in a previous hearing, admitted giving a drink of whisky to two players to raise their spirits and keep them from catching cold after gruelling loss to Northwestern. The "little doctor" was drawn into the case right after the 193. football season by John Golem-geske. Golem-geske. captain-elect for 1936. Golemgeske charged that Mean-well Mean-well had induced him to circulate a petition among the players demanding- Spears' resignation. So far Spears has maintained a discreet silence. He is scheduled to air his views publicly late today. to-day. Taylor. High Clash Tonight On Provo Floor Wildcats Slightly Favored Over Pioneers; Provo, American Fork Play Friday Lehi and B. Y. High schools will lire the opening gun in this week's Alpine division basketball basket-ball schedule when the rival teams clash tonight in the "Y" Women's gymnasium. The main game starts i at p. m. The other two games of the division are scheduled Friday with the undefeated American Fork and Provo teams meeting in the Bulldog gymnasium and Lincoln high school traveling to Pleasant Grove for a contest with the Vikings. Vik-ings. Both "Y" high and Lehi have won one game and lost 3 and it will be a battle between the clubs to see which stays at the top of the lower division. Provo and 'American Fork are tied for first place to lead the upper division and Pleasant Grove, with two victories vic-tories anil two defeats, is third. The Wildcats of Coach Fred Dixon won their first fame of the season over Lincoln following a nearly complete change in the lineup. Players who were inelig-rble inelig-rble before the Lincoln game make the Wildcats one of the strongest tdubs in the division and one which is likely to put the skids under Ross Nielsons' Pioneers. Merrill, Mangum, Wedge and Taylor Tay-lor made a good showing in their first game5. Two terrific battles are docketed ' Friday. The Cavemen of Ameri can Fork, with four victories, are not dismayed by the staggering record of Glenn Simmon's Bulldogs Bull-dogs nor by the pungent press agent ing the Provoans have had. The Cavemen are out to take the lead. The Bulldogs, with a splendidly balanced team which scores from any angle, is heavily favored, how-eve how-eve r, to keep its clean slate. At Pleasant Grove another battle bat-tle is expected. Coach Don Dixon's Tigers, headed by "Towering Tidd" Johnson, second highest scorer in the division, is a potentially powerful pow-erful team, just like Coach Eleroy "West's Vikings. A nip-and-tuck contest is expected.
