PROVO'S MOST MODERN THEATRE LEWIS FORCES LABOR ISSUE WASHINGTON, Nov. 26 (U.R) President John L.. Iiewis of the United Mine Workers moved today to place the case for industrial unionism before the organized workers of America in his clash with the leadership of the American Amer-ican Federation of Labor. Lieutenants of Lewis announced that his program for mass organization organ-ization of industries was being sent out immediately to every central cen-tral labor body, state federation, federal labor union and international interna-tional union in the country.. The announcement emphasized Lewis' determination to go forward for-ward with his program despite a plea for reconsideration by President Presi-dent William Green of the American Amer-ican Federation of Labor. Green is supporting the official federation policy of craft unionization union-ization in opposition to Lewis' program of industrial unions. Lewis resigned Saturday as vice- president of the federation in order to devote all his energies to the campaign. Despite the bitterness of the split, Lewis and his affiliated lead ers emphasized they had no in tention of withdrawing from the federation. Here j were opportunities on every hand j for his skill and frontier powers j to materialize, and here his vis- ' sion expanded over a territorial ' empire larger than Germany and : France combined. j Salt Lake valley was "the j place" but his influence extended : far beyond. Indeed there was a j corridor reaching to the Pacific. ; Hence when necessity seemed to ; require a government other than the ecclesiastical machinery that the first two years, the territory over which authority was to be exercised must be determined. While church courts might serve the members very well, non-Mormons were not satisfied. There was, therefore, need for a civil government that would be recognized recog-nized by the federal authority. To provide for such a government, govern-ment, a convention was summoned in March, 1849. to be held in Salt Lake City. At the time this petition was made there was not more than one-sixth the required number for statehood, but by 1852 there were more than 15,000 people in Utah proper, and streams of im migration were flowing into the territory each year. -Moreover the Mormons pioneered settlements in Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, California, Califor-nia, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico, and the influence of those pioneers is still felt in these states. Time and space will not permit I detailing the great achievements of the Mormons in developing this western wilderness. Suffice it to say no phase of colonial life was neglected. Not only were religion and morality emphasized but serious consideration was given to home making, agriculture agricul-ture and industry, education and recreation. Under the wise counsel coun-sel and statesmanlike leadership of Brigham Young and his able lieutenants, all frontier problems were met with skill and decision. Originality, individual initiative, power to meet all difficulties courageously and faith to sur- ' mount them, these were qualities developed in the Mormons wher-j wher-j ever their lot was cast. Such i flexibility, such ability to adjust I to changing conditions would help I now to solve our difficult and , complicated problems.
