Show PAGE THREE Long's Income Unknown Figure WASHINGTON, Sept. U r.i:--Sen. Huey P. Long Lived in one of the capital's fashionable hotel-apartments, hotel-apartments, rode in an expensive automobile and spent money freely, free-ly, but little was known about the amount of his personal fortune. He told the senate one day his income for 1935 was $25,000. Recalling that a senator's salary sal-ary is only $9,000, Sen. Millard E. Tydings, D., Md., asked: "Where did the rest come from?" It was paid by people who didn't have the scense that I have and hired me as their lawyer," Long replied. In response to another query, he said he spent most of it "on brass bands, football parries and drinks for my friends." BABSON SAYS COSTS GO OP WTCLLESLEY HILLS, Mass., Sept. 11 l'.R Living costs already al-ready are starting upward and a further rise lies ahead in the next few months, Roger W. Babson, the statictician, said today. In his annual "question box" in connection with the 22nd annual national business conference, Babson Bab-son said this trend should be watched carefully, "because it ia of extreme importance that the cost of living does not get out of hand right now." "The president obviously will do all in his pover to keep living costs within bounds," he said, "such an insistence on his part is both sound economics and good politics." In answer to a question regarding regard-ing the effect of Huey Long's death on the general political situation and his "share-the-weath" movement, Babson said that "bullets never killed an idea," and whatever value lay in Long's program would persist despite his assassination. "Personally," Babson continued. "I consider that his 'share-the-wealth' movement was on the wane. His third party therat was also fading fast. "Knowing that death would be his lot," he said in an appeal for public subscription of a memorial fund, "Dr. Weiss cheerfully laid down his life on the altar of personal sacrifice for the .good of humanity. "It is fitting that politicians have brought home to them the fact that tyrants, usurpers, demigods demi-gods and dictators have no place in the United States of America."
