Mrs. Augusta Hile, mother-in-law of the attractive Mrs Greta Hcnkel, who testified in Haupt-mann's Haupt-mann's behalf yesterday, told the court Fisch borrowed S43.r)0 from her "and never paid it back not a cent of it." The evidence was used to support sup-port Hauptmann's assertion that he. too, lent Fisch considerable money, and that Fisch owed him $7. a 00 when he left lhe United States on the visit to Leipzig. Earlier, Hauptmann's defense fought bitterly to establish a theory that their client was "framed" by police, and that a board from which the kidnap ladder lad-der was constructed did not come from his attic, as the state con-lends. con-lends. Through Dr. Erasmus Hudson, physician and finger print expert, it set forth that there was only one nail hole m the ladder section, sec-tion, and nol rour as the prosecution prosecu-tion has declared. The matter of the nail holes v as important, because Arthur Koehler. the stage's wood expert said he had matched four of them against holes In the attic beam, and that nails fitted in them per-ectly per-ectly Dr. Hudson was not shaken by Attorney General David T. Wil-entz Wil-entz biting cross examination .and he left the stand at 11:35 a. m., still insisting he saw only one nail hole in the section when he examined it in March of 1932. A heated debate over- finger prints brought out the fact that Dr. Hudson found ' 500 prints" on the ladder through his silver nitrate nit-rate process, although the state experts had been unable to find any at all at the beginning of its tests. The government insists that Hauptmann wore gloves when he committed the kidnaping. With its ace fingerprint expert off the stand, the defense began its attack on the credibility of witnesses who said they saw Bruno Hauptmann near the Lindbergh Lind-bergh estate at the time of the kidnaping. The "character and general reputation for truthfulness' of Millard Whitehead who testified he saw Hauptmann on two occasions in February 1032, were assailed by William Whitehead, a neighbor, who testified that Whitehead's reputation was "not of the best." Wilentz asked only one question quest-ion on cross-examination. It was: "Were you ever in jail." The answer was "yes."
