Fingernail chewing will be especially espe-cially in order for adherents of the Fifth ward, winners in the Eastern division, for the perennial champs have shown signs of a bit of a slip this season. This sign came when the Manavu ward gave them a decided de-cided licking in one of the later divisional games. Sixth-Fifth Play-Sixth Play-Sixth ward, the runner-up team in the Western division, which toppled top-pled the Fourth ward leaders in cii2 game, will tangle with the Fifth at 7:30 on Wednesday and at S:30 Manavu ward will play the lomth. The teams play again Thursday night to settle the little a:jru;:ient as to which team takes the place annexed last year by Fifth ward. Fifth had little trouble in making its way to the church finals at Og-den Og-den last year, but struck a snag on tho first night of play. The team fronwthe Lincoln vard of Salt Lake trounced them, 56-29. On the samenight, the Alpine ward runner-up team from the Provo division, di-vision, created an upset by beating the Ogden Eleventh 30-26. Fifth ward subsequently made its way to the consolation championship cham-pionship by a semi-final victory from its division team Alpine, and by winning from the Poplar Grove ward team of Salt Lake, .26-24 on the final night. The Lincoln ward of Salt Lake won the championship by squeezing out wins over several fast teams, one outstanding quint being from the Adams ward of Los Angeles. . NEW FOOTBALL RULES ADOPTED Old Sideline Play Abolished In New Grid Code; Hack Tackling Out. The NEW YORK, Feb. 14 (U.I!) nation's football coaches, increasingly increas-ingly important factors in college athletic systems because of the depression, de-pression, enjoyed additional prestige pres-tige today when the national football foot-ball ri Tes committee announced adoption of two rule changes they had recommended. Emerging from its secret three-day three-day session at Philadelphia, the rules committee of the Nationa' Collegiate Athletic association announced an-nounced these changes in the existing ex-isting code: Two New Rules (1) Side zones, 10 yards wide, were established on either side of the field to eliminate loss of downs on futile side line plays. This will strengthen the game's offensive offen-sive side. (2) The definition of ""clipping" was broadened to include any contact con-tact with the back of a player not carrying the ball, and the penalty for "clipping" was reduced from 25 yards to 15 to insure prompt penalizing by hitherto hesitant field officials. Their adoption marks a distinct triumph for the coaches in their brisk warfare with field officials. Today's report does not mention the field officials' radical recommendation recom-mendation that a "fifth down" be allowed the offensive team inside its -own or the opponent's 20-yard line. The new definition of "clipping" will make it illegal for a-player to run into the back of an opponent not carrying the ball. This is in addition to the previous rule against throwing or dropping the body across the back of an opponent's op-ponent's legs below ftie knees. Under the new side line rule, when the ball becomes dead in the side zones it will be moved immediately immed-iately to a point 10 yards from the side lines without time being taken out. If the ball goes out of bounds, it will be brought in 10 yards from the side tine instead of 15 as heretofore. Times Hard For Athletes fc Games Getting Too Rough By JHENRY McEEMORE United Preis Staff Correspondent DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 14 (U.R) The man who expressed the fear that American athletics reached their peak in the past Olympic games and are due to decline and fade away, nfay yet prove to be a grade A prophet. For in the past two months there have been two unmistakable signs that this country's athletes are losing some of the virility and ruggedness which carried them to prominence. Ask Five Downs-Sign Downs-Sign No. 2 was a few days ago when a group of football coaches urged that a team be given five first downs once it drives into 'it's opponent's 20-yard line. It is to be hoped that both these suggestions are squelched. For if they are not even little Freddie with his adenoid trouble can figure out what will happen. Players of other sports will become dissatisfied dissatis-fied with the difficulties of their games, and demand wholesale changes.
