Show PAGE TWO PROVO (UTAH)' EVENING HERALD WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1933 t Subscription terms by carrier in $5.00 the year in advance; J. A. Owens, Business Manager. Stitl Handing Out Millions u ' Despite all the congressioKSTfc-aying about "economy congress still okays payment of ciuiwarranted subsidies to - steamship and airpiane concerns. The amount is more than '$15,000,000 a year; the money is handed to favored concerns by the postoffiee which is operating far in the red. Fantastic sums, are given to steamship lines for carrying carry-ing a few pounds of mail. In some cases more than $5000 a pound is paid by taxpayers for ocean transportation! of mail, handled almost without cost by the carrier. Payment of subsidies is based on some vague theory ; - that American shipping is being benefited. Certainly, the stockholders are but only at the expense of hard-pressed taxpayers. The scandalous lending of pubfckr funds to favored steamship lines, at practically no interest, for the building of ships that cannot be operated successfully, coupled with the consequent subsidizing of the lines, is a continuing outrage, not only against taxpayesrHcrut against common sense. - American business, mainly, has to stand on its own feet. To tax it for the benefit W a favored few, in one line of business, is unjust.. Congress ought to stop this pouring out of public funds for private benefit and stop it now. And What Might Your Choice Be? Having run out of plots, or something, the literary world is all agog with excitement, trying to discover "the ten most beautiful words in the English language." Dorothy Parker, 'who is on record as liking insurance salesmen better than authors, thinks "cellar-door" is the swellest word. Hendrik van Loon, the historian, comes out for "cuspidor." All the humorists, of course, are 'way out in front with suggestions. They aieled by Ring Lardner, who advances the claims of "gangrene' as This makes it necessary for "spinach" or "measles." Getting right down to cases, the most beautiful word in the. dictionary probably is the one that gives most joy to m"osf rconlp That gets it down to "yes" or "no." If you're asking your sweetie to' marry you, "yes" is your word. If you're asking your doctor if an operation is necessary, "no" gets the call. At a guess, we'd nominate "yes" for the prize. It has probably given more joy to the world than any other word And held more jobs for assistant vice presidents. How Politicians Waste YOUR Money THE GROWING FEDERAL ARMY In 1890 only 16G,690 Americans worked for the federal government in civil service. Ten years later the number had bulged to 378 000. 4 In 1920 it was 597,000 ; in 1930 it had grown to 009,000. But congress was just getting into its bureau-creating stride. In 1932 it soared the payroll to 732,460. For 1933 the number will be still greater despite the fewer Americans at work in industry, and the lessened national earning power.
