The Utah county extension program pro-gram carries projects in dairying, animal husbandry, fruits and insects, in-sects, poultry, farm accounts, foods and clothing, rodents and 4-H club work. In each of these projects voluntary local leaders assist in directing the work locally. In 1-H club work alone in Utah county, 76 local leaders are giving their time. The closing of the year in the fall brings on the achievement achieve-ment excicises of the 4-H club members with awards of pins from the Utah Bankers association. Some 500 members will be given awards this fall. Community and district programs are being arranged arrang-ed in AJpine, Fleasant View, Spring-ville, Spring-ville, Spanish Fork, Salem, Goshen and Genola. Exercises have already been held in Springlake, Mapleton" and Birds Eye. The 4-H boys and girls partici-paled partici-paled in all the state contests and have won many state honors. The boys demonstration team just returned re-turned from a trip to Portland and the livestock 4-H boys just received checks in amount of nearly 5200 as premiums for their showing at the state fair. Local leaders not only help with 4-H club work but they' fire also selected to further adulM extension activities. Word has just been received from Director C. B. Smith at Washington, Wash-ington, D. C, that "377,027 adult and junior local leaders assisted in formulating and carrying out county coun-ty and community extension programs." pro-grams." Director Smith gives some interesting inter-esting facts as to the accomplishments accomplish-ments of these unselfish local lead- ers. He says that, "Assuming that each local leader spends 11 days per year on leadership activities (studies in four states indicate that iocal leaders spend 11.77 days per year on leadership work) the voluntary vol-untary contribution of rural people to extension teaching is equivalent to 13,324 full time workers employed employ-ed for one year of 300 working days. That is why extension is able to accomplish so much. There are more than two full-time volunteer workers for each paid worker. Now when a local leader attempts at-tempts to teach r lead he himself learns. He learns faster and more than anyone else. Wo have then in our 377,027 local leader 377,027 learners quite a substantial number num-ber of students as compared with the number of students in all our colleges of agriculture. In addition to the above leaders there were many other adults and boys and girls who conducted teaching demonsttations under the guidance of extension workers. The total number of adult result demonstrations dem-onstrations reported in 1931 including includ-ing those conducted by demonstrators demonstrat-ors who also served in other ways as local leaders, was 1,057,489. The number of projects completed . by 4-H club members was 1,114,065. The 60,781 organized boys and girg' club groups had a. total membership mem-bership of 360,653 different boys arid 529,721 different girls. The 3,755 different county associations fostering extension work had a membership of 818,221. Women to the number of 760,171 were associated asso-ciated with the 38,358 special home demonstration club groups. It is only fair that proper recognition recog-nition be given the volunteer services serv-ices of these unpaid leaders MEATS AND GROCERIES PHONE 534 464 WEST CENTER ST.
