NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER IV jy;DLEY bad been reconnoiterlng and bad found out all about Sttu Doby's botel and the attached scattering of bouses and log cabins Ha returned to Dona who was sitting sit-ting on the worn steps looking out into the white moonlight. Dud bad discovered one thing that elated bim because it fitted the plan be bad In mind. "I have sallied forth and return with news." be greeted Dona. "What news?" "it Is a short 20 miles from the spot where you sit to Three Rlrers," Dudley paused accusingly. "The rest of the way Is mountain road. You don't know log roads so you won't understand until tomorrow." tomor-row." "It would have been wonderful by moonlight." he urged. "1 was tired and 1 didn't want to tackle Dad till I was rested." Dona refused to tell the real reason why she bad put up with Setb Doby. The truth was she bad expected help from the old rancher, help that he had politely refused. Dudley figured he bad made a point and hurried on. 'There are hundreds of horses by actual count and six mud huts." " 'Doby' you mean." "Six 'dobey buts." Dudley corrected cor-rected himself, "two log cabins and a bouse where a parson Uvea.' Dona laughed softly. "You mean Sam Dean. He is a sort of evangelist evan-gelist of the plains." . "Well, anyway be marries all the folks who are married out here," Dudley persisted. "Did you find Sath Doby's car-den?" car-den?" Dona asked. "My mouth was open to ask yon to stroll there with me right now." Dudley caught ber arm. They walked through tie sand down past the corrals and came to a grove of cotton woods. Setb Doby bad reclaimed a bit of the dry land from the foothills and bad watered it, Cnder the trees there was green grass and flowers. Shrubs grew In dense clumps and gave off fragrance that made Dona's heart quicken. Mountain laurel, red willow, black birch and a host of her old friends were there to greet her. MI think I shall stay this time." she said with a sigh as she sat down cross-legged on the D UDLEY sprawled at her feet and propped his chin on his el- Dona whirled and saiv a wide hal sweep downward as a lankf form took shape before her. "But Dud. it Isn't fair for you to ask that! Remember our bargain." "I know it looks as though 1 wanted want-ed to make a sure thing of it but it's the only plan that is bound to work." "Why?" Dona's voice was low. "We will come in with a 'Just married' set of smiles. Your Dad likes me and he'll be pleased. He won't go out and shoot someone to celebrate his only daughter's marriage mar-riage not your Dad." Dudley bent closer. "Can't you see, darling, that it Is sure to work?" bows. "After we corral your Dad. which according to Doby may be a job. we can spend our honeymoon here." Dona sunk a heel into the soft earth. "I'm worried about Dad I'm afraid we won't be able to handle him." There was a catcb in her voice, "Looks as though there is only one way." Dudley sat up beside Dona. "What is that?" she asked eagerly. eager-ly. "It sounds melodramatic but. confound con-found it, this whole thing is a bit colorful,' Dudley began. "It would be worth anything 1 possess to keep Dad out of a scrape," Dona's red lips parted softly in the patchy moonlight and ber eyes shone. "Now you can see why I put up with the city. For five years I've been able to keep Dad away from trouble. He bad to do bis fighting over long distance telephone." Dudley captured her band and held It tight. "There Is just one way nd you have to listen to me until Fre planned It all." Dona nodded but her Hps closed suddenly. "Your Dad Is a good sport He's a man who can't be told what to do bat he will do the right thing. Now all you have to do is to marry me tonight" He did not try to draw her Into his arms but waited, watch-rag watch-rag the color play In her satin cheeks. lONA remained silent thinking of many. things. Suddenly she was not sure. Her bead was a whirl of racing thoughts. The plan was almost sure to work but could she do It? Did she love Dudley Winters? Win-ters? Many times she had thought she did and again she was not sure. "It isn't as if you were not going to do It anyway, dear. I love you madly and 1 believe you love me." Dudley burst out. unable to control himself any longer. "I'm just not sure." Dona's voice was small and faltering. "Ob,, Dud. if I only knewl Does anyone ever knowr "You're Just worried, dear. I'll make It my full-time job to make you love me." Unable to light back the surge of emotion that swept over him be caught her In his arms. Then Dona remembered Setb Doby's words, "Swede Delo means ta get his man this time." With an effort she arose. Instantly be was beside ber and had eaptured both her bands. "You must marry me, darling!" His voice was husky. Dona tilted ber face upward and ber cheeks shone white and free from color. Quietly she answered, "I will marry you tonight Dud." A dark shadow bad moved across the patch of moonlight and baited behind a squaw berry bush just as Dudley made his plea. When Dona answered the shadow shrank back and was blotted out by the blackness black-ness of the clump of bushes. "I'll run and tell the parson," Dudley's, voiee shook. "We haven't any license." Dona's voice spoke a doubt that had leaped into her mind unbidden. Dudley waved a white paper. "1 got one to use when 1 won our little bet Got it last night" He hesitated hesi-tated to see how she would take this. "Where will we be married? Why can't I go with you to that parson?" par-son?" Dona did not want to be left alone just then. "It would be romantic to be married mar-ried here in the moonlight Don't you think?" Dudley put the question ques-tion eagerly. "The parson's place is a bit out of order." "I know the place and how dirty it is." Dona laughed as she thought of the impression Sam Dean's cabin would make on the scrupulous Dudley. "All right Bring him here. He has the ceremony memorised." mem-orised." a a TAUDLEY sped away, leaping over low bushes as be ran. He vanished van-ished Into the night and Dcna walked slowly toward the white square of moonlight. She was troubled and ber heart was pounding pound-ing wildly. Was she doing the right thing? Suddenly there was a soft step behind her and the swish of boot heels through the short grass. Dona whirled and saw a wide hat sweep downward as a lanky form took shape before her. Strong arms gripped her shoulders. Before she could free herself she had been kissed squarely upon the lips. Her assailant laughed softly as he treed ber and stepped back into the white square of moonlight "Stanley Black!" Dona gasped, forgetting in ber amazement to be angry at tbis unwarranted liberty. Stanley bowed and smiled. "A kiss for the bride." be said in an egen voice that held a hint or Irony. Dona stood transfixed, stariug at him as though she was gazing u?on an apparition. Stanley Black bad changed siuce she last saw him. Even the white moonlight could not hide that. There wan a making mak-ing light behind hard gray eyes and bis mouth had a queer twibt. But the change was not all in bis face. Dona seused it rather than saw it. He was under a strain (hat be could not hide from tier. She stepped into the moonlight and held out her baud.
