R PAULSON In a cold rain fit only for strangling kidnapers the .Brigham Young university spring football sauad minus the track-football men and a team composed of seniors sen-iors and alumni of the school, haggled hag-gled away at a football game that ended in a 6-6 tie, at the "Y" stadium sta-dium Wednesday afternoon. The alumni outfit made their six points in the second quarter by a pass from Bliss Hoover to Red Thorn after the Alums had given the varsity outfit somewhat of a pushing around. The varsity backs with a number num-ber of brilliant runs, cooperating with the rain (the seats were wet) kept the hundred-oud spectators on their feet from then on and cracked crack-ed through the "Old outfit" for a score in the first of the fourth quarter. Merkley raced around right end to make the score for the Cougar undergrad team. Great Team Assured The new rules, which forbid the use of the hands on the head by the defensive team didn't seem to bother the varsity much .and the old-timers only a little. Only one penalty was called for this offense, and this on the Alumni, team. Coach Ott Romney seems assured assur-ed of having the best team ever in the history of the school when play is resumed next fall. Although only about four or five of the squad playing yesterday will likely be used on the main string next fall a num ber of the boys showed a great promise and with the addition of tho huskies now out on the track. the team next year should mak Ike Armstrong and his champions from Utah U. sit up and take plcn ty of notice. Simmons. Merkley and LaComb did some speedy work in the back field with LaComb making sonic accurate passes. LaComb looked good as a blocker, particularly in the first part of the game. Enough VELVET for 50 cigarettes . 15c 77 All Star with Glen Wilkinson. Wilkinson did some good running and passing but also contributed a couple of fumbles. In the line, all-conference Buke Robison lived up to his title with a great performance, Hap Nisonger. who played the other wing position part of the time was conspicuous by his smearing of plays. Robison also punted fairly well, although his punting perform ance was not equal to that of Buss Koovers, of the All-Star team, who also did some fancy running and passing. Steve Murdook, on the varsity team played a bang-up game at center. Although the varsity team made more yardage from scrimmage, particularly after the half, the all- tar team by no means looked like an infirmary outfit. Simba Thorn, weighing 205 pounds, crashed through the varsity line time after time for sizeable gains and smacked smack-ed into the opponents with much .he same power and speed he pos-?nsed pos-?nsed when he won his way to an all-conference post playing for the B. Y. U. Andy Dastiup, guard, who ha? been aiding in the coaching of the "Y" team this spring smeared up many a play started by the varsity. var-sity. Andy played a great game on the line along with Dick Thome, center, and Henry Simmons at tackle. Obnover was barking the signal" for the Alurnni team and played a good game. George Cooper also showed up well at the other tackle position. Dubious Tackling Keith Wang'sgard. playing right guard for tho Alumni, stopped a number of would-be goal tries with timely tackles. The tackling of all the Alumni team came very near to being "outside the law" in many ccaes. The new rules state that the tackle may not be made on the fly. The Cougars had a number of k Oe recommande , . . ticulierement ,par , sa finesse . et sa purete. . .'.7f' . -: .' f "- V ."-. -,."5..:,... . ... chances to score in the third quar ter but the grads stiffened twice j when their opponents were past the j 10-yard, line, and fumbles and a for- j ward pass over the line checked their drives. Near the end of the second quarter .Wilkinson passed to Buke Robison for 40 yards, then a 10 yard run by Wilkie and a 15-yard 15-yard penalty on the grads for using us-ing their hands placed the ball on the one yard line, but the ball went over and Hoover kicked to the middle mid-dle of the field. On the Cougar's winning play. LaComb threw- a 10-yard pass to Metkley after which Mathews made a three-yard gain through ight tackle and LaComb went through the line on a play. Merk- ley made the scoring run around the end. ' Lineup: Varsity Alumni Murdock c D. Thome Fever a lg .... Dastrup Hales rg Wangsgard Condie It. .... Cooper Horlacher rt. . . H.
