School Financing The board of education of Provo is now wrestling with the problem of -financing; the operation of the city school system sys-tem for the remainder of the school year. It's admittedly a difficult task; due tothe shrinkage of the estimated revenues atrthe disposal of the schools and the condition of the mbney "market, which almost prevents further "borrowing. To make the problem still more complex, there is-the bj3get for next year to be met with an estimated shortage 6fj$50,0'00 in the revenues of the district. On the other hand, we must not lose sight of the welfare wel-fare of childhood. We must have economy, of course, but it sHould be wise economy, with a view of conserving the basic needs of the race. Then there is the question of the teachers contracts for the, school year now drawing to a close. Numerous proposals arid .counter proposals have been made by both teachers and bofrd members towards a solution of this question. Although Al-though there has been some lost motion and waste of time wrtich makes Provo lag-behind most of the other districts in disposing of the problem, a solution agreeable to all is believed be-lieved to be near. c :r One of the hopeful indications in the discussions between be-tween the board, representatives of the teachers and citizens is 'the cooperative attitute manifest. There seems to be a willingness on the part of all factions to do what is right and fair to the limit of possibility. With such a spirit pervading, per-vading, there should be no doubt in the minds of the school patrons.that a fair and equitable solution will ultimately be worked out'. R. PHIBBS, HARLOW E. SMOOT, Directors. Hill Billy Admiring: reader -writes, and closes' this way: "You evidently have a good time both in town and country." I do have, and I am glad if some of my fun shows thru my copy. The good Lord knows there is enough sad copy; enough wailing-wall lamentation; enough not to be too durn nice about it, belly-aching in the public prints these days. I am having more fun out of life every year I live; almost every day I discover something less to worry over, and frequently I discover some small pastime that brings me simple pleasure that leaves no heartburn and that costs nothing but an appreciative spirit. I suppose the years in the hills have sweetened my outlook on life considerably; being away'from the sad works of man most of the time. I go to town merely to be amused, not enraged, and, when town begins be-gins to irritate rather than amuse, I flee to the rock of my salvation and talk , to the black cat and the white horse. My notion is that a fellow who has half a mile of mountain water running past his shack door, he owning in fee silly that half mile of life abounding, has all the heaven he requires. I could spend the rest of my years doing nothing but fooling around that stream; making little dams; planting weeping weep-ing willows; grubbing out snags; making gardens; sowing seeds of wild flowers; transplanting maiden hair fern into shaded, moist nooks; why the vista is as boundless as it is heavenly. Suppose a fellow put in a dam a quarter-mile up stream and from there led a six-inch pipe into that little flat below the shack ; and scooped him out a pool, and in the I center placed a fountain; and in i the pool planted trout, and those big- Wisconsin bullfrogs that sound like a choir of bull fiddleB; and on the north side of the pool built him a rustic arbor with a dovecote above and entwined with sweet briar roses, -end$ i bed of those little ;eet violets; and thenut in the si.i m&n.tfis of summer 'just lying n the sun, with an occasional lim-burger lim-burger sandwich on home-baked rye and a flagon 01 cold, cold beer, with great glistening beads of ambrosial am-brosial dew on the outside and little bubbles of life on the inside, and a snow-capped dome of frosty froth above all and, of course, a hum-rning-biid humming. Welfc- anyhow, l' got the limburger. CAUiJ or THANKS' . We desire to thark all those v.lr in any way ass ted us during the illness an: death of our belovec daughter, ShyrWien.
