MQRRIS FISHBEIN occurring jut as often in thoa children who were operated on as Editor, Journal of Americau Medi- i jn thoe not operated on. There was a it'Hsencu auiuuuk ui iin-uiiiat- loe fever. in the children whose ton-sila ton-sila hed been removed and a lessened lessen-ed amount of infections of the heart. , However, the difference in the figures Vas slight. Dr. Kaiser is convinced that the removal of the tonsil influencps appreciably tho incidence of sore ' throats and renders children lesa susceptible to scat let fever and diphtheria.' It does not appear to be especially important for the prevention pre-vention of head cold find ' infections infec-tions of the ear, and it' influences unfavorably the' occurrence of bronchitis and pneumonia. Th wholesale removal. of tonsils. whether diseased or related to dia-ease, dia-ease, it not warranted. In certain conditions they may be removed for definite effects,' which experience exper-ience has shown may eertainly be secured. At present, the vat majority ma-jority of physicians are . convinced that the correct method for removal remov-al of the tonsils is complete surgical surgi-cal temoyaU rather than. the uc of slow destruction -by electt Icily, or any other recently . introduced, method. . . 1-- LINDON HVS RADIO rams -ft ml FRIDAY, OPTOBER 8 : 11:50 a.mM NEC Dishes prepared in true Italian style; 5:30 p.m., NBCi Quaker man: 5:45 p.m., NEC Brownbilt Footlites; 6 p.m., NBC Cities Service concert group; f p.m., NBC Inter-woven Sox; .7:3Qi p.m., NBC Thirty-pieee orchesfra; 18 voice chorus in Armour presen-, tations; 8 p.m., NBC . Ten years ago, 1000 children in Rochester, N. Y., had their tonsils removed at the age of five or six years- They were examined at that time, and complete records of infections, previous to the operation were notfd. Ten years ago, the parents of an equal number of children were recommended rec-ommended to have the children's tonsils removed, but the operation' was not performed for various rea sons. These two groups of 1000 children pnrh rnrsented .children in the same schools, and from the samp homes, living under similar conditions. condi-tions. Now, Dr. Albert D. Kaiser has looked into the records of these children, who are just qf high school age, and his information affords af-fords definite evidence of the value of the operation in those children operated on for the control pf cer- j tain conditions studied in ooin ' rrrouDS. In. order to. make the comparison, the complaints usually associated with infection of the tonsils were tabulated, the history jot infections of each child was obtained, and any physical defects in any way related to the tpnsU3 and adenoids were recorded. re-corded. The figures show that sore throats, a common childhood complaint, com-plaint, does not occur as frequently op as severely in a child from whom the tonsils have been removed as in one in whom they have-not been removed. Only 10 per cent of the children whose tonsils were removed re-moved had. any complaint of , sore throat," whereas 33 per cent of the nth era had such a complaint. Frequent head colds occurred in 45 per cent of the children before operation. . Ten years after the operation, op-eration, 22 per cent pf those operated oper-ated on still . have head colda, whereas 30- per cent of. those, not operated on have head colds! . . It was. found that measles occurred occur-red with equal frequency in both groups of children. Diphtheria occurred oc-curred ia 28 cases among those children .operated on, and in , 42 cases among those not operated on.. Scarlet fever occurred In 73 cases of those operated on, and in 102 cases, of those not operated on. One of ...the- chief reasons why the tonsils, are removed. is, .to pre-.vtnt pre-.vtnt rheumatic manifestations, in. eluding St. Vitus' .dance, rheumatic fever, and Infections of. the heart. Apparently St. Vitus? dance was not aft'ected by removal of the tonsil $ .-v- 'i - r- The sunshine committee met at the home of Mary li. Fage Thursday Thurs-day afternoon, Mrs. Mary B.
