MEIUULL I have heard "Romeo Et Juliette,'' as a grand opera in the Metropoli tan opei'a house. Charles Gounod wrote the music, William Shake speare the words, and Amenta Galli-Curci and Edward. Johnson sang the two leading roles. That is getting a quartet of tre mendously great people together and there were others. Gladys' Swarthout, Lawrence Tibbett, Leon Hothier weFe also in the cast. I "was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Harold W. Bentley at the opera. Prof, and Mrs. William F. Hanson were also present to enjoy the great ensemble. I think a finer afternoon' we have not had in a long time. Of course we could not under stand the words, but words, were totally to-tally unnecessary in "Romeo Et Juliette,". The music and the acting was sufficient The balcony tecene was enacted - very well although Galli-Curci fell a little short of Edward Ed-ward Johnson in the ardor of her love. . :' The orchestration of .the piece was especially wonderful, The instruments in-struments flowed in among the voices making a unity of great' beauty. Leon Rothier as the Frajr iJaur-ent iJaur-ent was magnificent both in his singing and hfs acting. He, in fact, wast almost the star, so perfect Was his performance. Edward Johnson made a good looking Romeo with i plenty of fire and a beautiful tenor voice, but he was not quite met half way in acting by the madame, though he was outsung. (.Htr glorious glor-ious voice warbled the songs of love in a way that thrilled the hearts y her huge audience. Prof. Thatcher C. Jones, Dr. and Mrs. Violet . Brown, Mr. and Mts. Kenneth Kuhre and . I attended a performance of "Richelieu,' played by Walter Hamden and his com. pany at Broadway and 62nd street. .1 have seen Mr. Hamden In Shakespearean parts, but- never have I seen him to better advan tage. His; Richelieu was wonderfully wonderful-ly human and sympathetic. He has modernized the play slightly, but he. ha retained the dignity of the great lines. ' ' ' . - The. famous quotations, among them, "In the lexicon of youth there la no such word as' fail and "This pen Is : mightier than the sword" flowed, from the great reader's lips like wine; . Hamden is always worth seeing in anything at all. Joseph Nelson, well known architect archi-tect of . Provo, paid New York a visit last week-end. Mr. Nelson had been on a' business trip to Boston and other' points where he spent some time inspecting public buildings build-ings and in interviewing important. " ' As a guest of Mr.' and Mrs. Ray Olpin and in company with Dr. and Mrs. Carl F. Eyring and Dr. and Mrs. Carl Christensen, I attended a theater on uptown Broadway. The offering was a neat little comedy, VLet Us Be Gay." It was a modern piece having in it all of the modern properties Including divorce, philandering phil-andering and what not. 1 ...In the prelude a young couple was shown at the cross roads. She had learned of her husbands in fidelity and was seeking a divorce though she loved him dearly, and though he returned her love with Interest. , The play dealt with their meeting as supposed strangers at a house party three years later. Though both had had their fling, they had found no one to take each other's places and, consequently, made up and; we presume, lived happily ever after, though both much moVe wisely than they had previously done. v Sterling Taylor, manager of Taylor.
