Auto 70 of 1983 graduates plan more education Confirming a trend of the past several years, over two-thirds (70 percent) per-cent) of the students who graduated from Utah high schools last spring plan to continue their education this fall at post high school institutions. This was among the facts about the Class of '83 which the Utah State Board of Education heard at its meeting last week at the Sevier Valley Tech Area Vocational Center in Richfield. Presenting to the Board the results of the September Intentions of Utah's 1983 High School Graduates, an annual survey of data about the plans of the state's high school seniors, was F. Wayne Glaus, specialist, accounting and auditing, Utah State Office of Education. , Of the remaining 30 percent of the 19,443 members of last year's graduating class, nearly 22 percent plan to go to work or enter military service; the other eight percent intend to get married, go on a mission or are undecided. Forty-five percent of those who intend in-tend to go on to school say they will attend at-tend a four-year college, 22 percent a two-year college; and 1.77 percent say they will enroll in a business sdhool. As a group, 13,243 students hope to go to four-year colleges. The University Univer-sity of Utah was their first choice (27.79 percent), followed by Utah State University (17.95 percent); Weber State College (15.32 percent); Dixie College (9.40 percent); and Utah Technical College at Provo (9.33 percent.) Utah Tech at Salt Lake was next and then Southern Utah State College, Snow College and College of Eastern Utah. Brigham Young University got the lion's share of private school votes ( nearly 93 percent) , the rest choosing Westminister College. Heidi Qardner H( II 789-3884 of the total, however, preferred private institutions, nearly 75 percent or 9,909 opting for the public colleges. Of the 345 who chose business colleges, col-leges, IDS Business College captured about 54 percent and Stevens Henager 37 percent. Approximately nine percent per-cent said they intended to go to out-of-state colleges. Among other data about the 1983 graduates documented in the survey results are the following: Over half (56.96 percent) earned a 3.0 or better grade point average; of them, only 10.49 percent do not intend to go on to college. Of those who plan to work, a third want to pursue trades and technical skills ; the rest plan to seek out service occupations such as waitresses or to go into the clerical or marketing field. The strongest determining factors in their choice of a post high school institution in-stitution were curriculum followed by religion-family-friends, and then by a close to home location. They felt the most influential factor fac-tor in student recruitment was information infor-mation from high school counselors, then letters from institutions, and high school orientation programs. The survey breaks down the data for each of Utah's 40 school districts as well. Granite, had the largest graduating class (3,400) and Daggett the smallest with 12. Sixty-six percent of the Granite grads plan to attend two or four years colleges. Of the Daggett twelve, eight planned college, three on military service, and one was undecided undecid-ed last May when the survey was taken. The September Intentions of Utah's 1983 High School Graduates is produced produc-ed by the Office of Administrative Services, Ser-vices, Dr. Lerue W. Winger, Associate Superintendent, Utah State Office of Education. .'rO For Sale: Dodge Charger, new transmission, good condition, $1900. D.
