Brockbank of Provo, . ;, t.5 f Inside Provo Then and Now By AUDRA HENDRICKSON More than a half -century ago, In 1892, to be exact, ' one . of the i earliest social club in the town was formed in Provo by a group of men and women who called their organization the Sunshine club. . .... The Sunshine club, non-existent now for many years, listed most of its members from the faculty fac-ulty at Brigham Young university, Provo doctors, lawyers and busi-. nesa men, and their wives. " Mrs. Edith Y. Booth of Provo, who unearthed the history of the ' Sunshine club, discovered that the membership was, as follows: Judge and Mrs. E. A. Wilson, President and Mrs. Benjamin ' Cluff, Prof and Mrs. George H. Brimhall, Dr. and Mrs. Milton Hardy, Prof, and Mrs. Henry E. J Giles, Judge and Mrs.- John E. Booth, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar B. r Young, Prof, and Mrs. N. L. Nelson, Nel-son, Prof, and Mrs. Joseph B. Keeler, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bean and Mr. and Mrs. Will Roberts. Met at Hornet " , The group met every two weeks . at the homes of members. Their meetings consisted of p a r 1 o r games, Mrs. Booth states, such as ' "charades, spin-the-plate, cross-lng-the-plains and guessing " fames." .' , . Dinner was served at each session, ses-sion, and" the menu, according to ' Mrs. Booth, would make a contemporary con-temporary banquet resemble the ' nibblings of a woman determined to -diet herself Into' non-existence. - Says Mrs. . Booth, "ihe repast consisted not of fruit cocktail, salad and canapes and the like, served on small tables,, but the lone dining table fairly groaned with platters of fried chicken or t turkey, mashed potatoes, chicken ; gravy, hot biscuits, dumplings, . corn-on-th-cob, green peas, beans, beets or whatever the season pro- . erneed. Special Fete v Special fetes took place two or mree umes during me year, in summer club members gathered for a festive hay-ride to one of the local spots of out-door beauty, and in winter they "made the same excursion in bobsleds. Oscar B. Young provided the " sleigh, which had nnrc hlnnrH to his pioneer father, Brigham . 'xoung oz Mormon lame. . ."Hih jinks," says Mrs. Booth, "were held freauentlv. A char. acter party took place one eve ning at me ur. Hardy home on First East between First and Second Sec-ond ' North. The women came dressed to renresent thi terparts in different countries." Sermons Topics AlthoUffh social inr(np uraa the main Duraoic of th Sifnvin ciup, me group spent many eve nings. discussing serious topics of the time. - A Mrs. Sorenson who came to Utah from the middle west gave talks to the club occasionally on proper diet for families and especially espe-cially for mothers. She met with the sunsmne women on several afternoons, stressing various reforms. She is best remembered tor tier advocation of. kjose clothing for young girls to replace the fash ionable corsets of the time. Mrs. Sorenson held that too much lacing lac-ing during the adolescence period could be harmful " .to growing bodies even to the extent of pre- ventlng the ; girls from having children later in life. - , Sorensonian Folly ' For-, the most part the male sel- tion of the Sunshine slub sniffed and elevated their noses at such outlandish talk, and especially at the doctrine of "very little meat, which should be eaten only once or twice a week They referred to Mrs. Soren- son's theory as the "Sorensonian folly.' Though all of the Sunshine clUb members ' have died long since, many of their children live on in Provo to carry their , names and their memories. - With the group went a local remnant of the old-fashioned old-fashioned point of viewleaving a brief nostalgia for 19th century ways of life, and 19th century ways of thinking that can never be recaptured.
