Show Deserter Back In U.S. Army After 41 Years FORT LEWIS, Wash., Oct. 22 (U.PJ Pvt. Rav H. Wheaton. 63. was back in the army awaiting discharge Saturday after being , "over the hill" for 41. yean. ' - Wheaton, who gave his address as "USA," surrendered to the duty officer here Thursday night. . ''I've been a deserter since 1908 and I can't stand if anymore, he said. - . ; . .: " The smail, white-haired "private" "pri-vate" said he deserted from Newport New-port News, Va., in October, 1908 while awaiting transfer to Cuba. . "I wrapped my uniform around a rock, dropped it in a canal and started walking.. I haven't staple stap-le since," he said. "I guess I should have turned myself in during the first world "war," he mused. "I kept moving too fast to get drafted and then I got afraid." , He said he . originally deserted because he didn't want to go back to Cuba, where he had contracted tropical fever earlier in his serv- Ice career.
