That wa the way In which her daughter refused to be paraded parad-ed before their frienda. Mrs Waring would have liked to walk along Main street and about the stores having people atare. thinking of Joan's Bticcesf. and glamorous adventures In New York. Tfa mother's 'triumphant manner man-ner was like a manner proclaiming. proclaim-ing. "This my daughter. She has been singing at the most popular pop-ular night clrb In New York!" She could not have been prouder tf Joan had sung at the Metropolitan Metropol-itan But Joan refused to be "shown off." -She had come home wearing the game suit she had worn when ahe departed. Therr was an unimpressive un-impressive array of frocks in the clos f of her bedrocm. The beautiful beau-tiful costumes she ha. worn when eh- Bang had been packed In a heavier trunk o cbme later. There was nothing whatever bout Joan's appearance to suggest sug-gest th brilliance and glitter of the lite which had so recently enveloped en-veloped her. She was content to sit at home, preferring to be there. She had drifted easily into the homely round of duties and seemed to find pleasure in such mild excitement as challenging Benny to a gatn o croquet, going to the library with him. attending attend-ing a movie or discussing household house-hold plans with Mrs. Waring and Sara, her sister-in-law. Happy aa ne was to hare her daughter at home. Mrs. Waring unconsciously slphed for a little of the reflected glory she thought might rightfully have been hera. THEN, too. Joan flatly refused to capitalize her accomplishments. accomplish-ments. She ha' declared tier In dention of staying feome "ftmrer and ever." She had said this fervently, fer-vently, almost childishly. She would find some work here In Memphis, she declared, perhaps teaching a class of vocal students. "Well, there's nothing like striking while the tron is hot.' ber mother counseled wisely "You wouldn't have any trouble getting pupils now while everybody every-body is talking about you." "No." Joan said "I bate that. This attitude waj beyond Mrs i Waring comprehension Thing were hard enough 1n this world without deliberately setting out to make them harder: But if Joan persisted tn this course. Mrs. Waring found vicarious vica-rious thrills In reading Pat's first letter. It was filled with extrava gant phrases. Pat sent a glowing account of the sea voyage, begin nlrvg with the first night on the hip when the captain hM invited Pat and Barney to sit at his table There were interesting people on the boat a fabulously rich Indian In-dian prince: a gray-haired, .distinguished .dis-tinguished foreign consul: a. charming woman whose husband had developed the resources of some of the more remote Islands: ome attractive English people: and a movie star who thought she was traveling incognito. Always and inevitably Pat's lavish adjectives led up to Barney, Bar-ney, who was simply perfect. Pat wrote tht she loved the ship, the deck sports at which tbey spent i their mornings, the lazy after noons on the cool, wind swept i decks, and the glamorous nights when she wore prett, frocks a-nd was sure that all the pth-er women aboard envied her as tbey saw her dancivg with Barney. The en thusiam thf was so characteristic character-istic of Pat colored every word of the incoherent but yivld account ANE morning Joan and Benny finished a game of tennis at Beauregard court and started home. "Let's stop for something cool to drink." said Benny, the victor. He was highly gratified over the outcome of the game because be-cause Joan had put up a good fight. She agreed, always eager to fall In with IT. plans Benny was himself these days. It the lo? g months In New York had brought nothing but pain to Joan they had at least brought happiness to Pat I and health to Benny Waiting for their drinks to be i served, they watched automobile? arriving and pulling away from ! the curb. Isn t it marve 1 lous?" j Joan waited She could nut 1 have spoken just then if n r lift depended on it. The other girl, missing nothing of Joan's agila tion. went on easily "Perhaps you didn't know, but Bob Weston is giving a yachting party. They're in Havana nowr ffcrrtmra V'in the crowd, naturally, and she wrote her mother that they're having the mont thrilling time! Isn't Barbara Bar-bara the luckiest girl you ever heard of?" "Yes." said Joan slowly. "She Is." Carol turned to her companion then. Joan drank the limeade quickly, scarcely conscious of what she was doing. So Barbara and Bob were ?- judged the best poem of the volume which closed" with the December De-cember number; and Virginia Eg-gertson, Eg-gertson, whose poem "A Little Ode to Prophecy," appears in the magazine. In addition to these writers who still live in Provo are several yho studied at Brigham Young university uni-versity such as Alberta Huieh Christenson, now residing in New York, who contributed a poem called "Twinkle Tree"; Helen Hinckley, represented by a one-act one-act play; and Helen Van Cott. who contributed a poem entitled "The Dream of the Gleaners." "Is Barbara Courtney the girl she meant? "Yes." "I shouldn't think he. would care anything about ber." "Why. Benny! You don't eves know her!" "Oh. I've seen her picture loti of times. Joan hesitated. Ttien eh asked. "Why don't you think b would like her?" "Because. answered Benny "he knows you." j She laughed but there wer tears in her eyes. Benny, with his absurd loyalty! How deal ; and good they were here at homo : and how wrong it was of ber tc ; trouble them as she had. Even I Beuny was trying to bring balm to her wounds. She should get back to work Immediately, without with-out wasting more time. Her hand:: seemed strangely empty these days. Now that Benny waa well there were no tempting trays to be prepared, no sick bed to b sheeted and aired, and no frail youngster to be bundled Into a big chair and wheeled out into the sunshine. The house waa kept so immaculate immac-ulate that It required tittle of heT time to set It In daily order. And when she entered the kitchen hei mother retell? 1. Get rJ&ht oot of thJs k1tchen .. Mrs. Waring would scold "Haven't 1 turned the rest of the house over to you. Joan? No. you can't heln me. There'H nothing for you to do here. Go on in tb living room and sing some of your songs." When Joan and Benny reached the house they found their moth- able pan of potatoes before her. "Joan." she Insisted. -There'i nothing for you to do here. Did you sing that pretty song for Benny the one that sounds like water ruaing 3ver fall?" Mrs. Waring had never seen a waterfall except In the movies. i Nevertheless, travel-starved and I loving beauty with all the passion of a nature that had been denied it. she had imagined such scenes many times. "Whfn -mr mhp comes It." Hew many times a- a little girl had Joan heard tha. phrase! But it had been Ion; time now with recurring disappointments and hardships, since the old. optimistic op-timistic tone had been in Mrs Waring's voice. Joan looked at her mother, pa tiently paring potatoes. and thought of Barbara Courtney on a beautiful yacht at sea. (To Be Conclude! DRAIN JOB IS DEBATED HERE Courrty and Provo city commissioners com-missioners are today investigating possibilities of completing the in stallation of a covered drain from Twelfth North on First East down to about Eighth North, a project which will be financed jointly by the city and county. The expense for cement and other material for making pipe for the drain will be approximately $600. The county commissioners will look over the project today before approving or rejecting it, as about two-third of the ditch is outside Provo city and would involve in-volve county expense. The only expense ex-pense will be for pipe materials. Provo city has offered Jto make the pipe with their facilities and the tabor wijl come under the CWA program. Dr. F. S. Harris, president of the Brigham Young university, pointed out the advantages advant-ages of covering the dangerous ditch to the city and county commissioners com-missioners Tuesday morning.
