SOFTBALL GIRLS The Vernal Girls Softball 8 and under team, the Vernal Crush, took third place at the 2008 Oquirrh Mountain Invitational. The team includes Cassidy Kennedy, Jacee Murray, Ellie Benedicto, Dacey Slaugh, Savannah Hartle, Morgan Reynolds, Paige Daggett, Madysen Petty, Alyson Birchell, Makayla Gamble, Madison Hadlock and Madison Rouska. Coaches are Treven Birchell, Bryan Rouska and Jen Rouska. Deadline extended for USU contest Each year, Utah State University Univer-sity Extension sponsors a photo contest highlighting images that showcase each county in the state. The deadline for entries has been extended to Oct. 1. Winning photographs will appear in the upcoming USU Extension Annual Review and a statewide Extension calendar. Photographers are encouraged encour-aged to take photos that repre DMS adds extra race to schedule Diamond Mountain Speedway will host an IMCA modified and a late model invitational race on Saturday, Aug. 2, starting at 6 p.m. Racing action will also include DMS regular classes as support but drivers will not be receiving points or pay-outs, just a fun night on the track. About a dozen modified and late model drivers were sent invi-tations invi-tations asking the to participate in the weekends events, which should be action packed excitement on the track. Young and old alike enjoy the hundreds of gallons of water being splashed around at any Ashley Regional MEDICAL CENTER I V - - Express Basin residents claim APHA championships Three Uintah Basin residents, and their horses, captured world titles in Fort Worth, Texas, earlier ear-lier this month during the American Ameri-can Paint Horse Association's 2008 World Championship Paint Horse Show. Doc O Color, owned by Kathy and Todd Bro of Roosevelt, was crowned champion of the 5- and 6-year-old Cutting Challenge during the June 2 1-July 5 event. The 6-year-old mare was shown by Mike Wood. During the challenge, horses are judged on their ability to calmly enter a herd, drive a single cow out, and prevent it from returning to the herd. This Fishing Dan Thacker is the first to . catch and turn in a tagged fish in The Fox Family Fishing Event. "I was just out enjoying a day of fishing on Big Sandwash Reservoir," Thacker said. "I didn't even know there was a fishing event going on. I kept five fish that afternoon and noticed one of them had a small red tag. I just figured there was some sort offish study and planned to drop by the Division of Wildlife Resources office to turn it in. Later, I mentioned the tagged fish to my brother-in-law. He's the one who told me the tag was likely part of the Family Fishing Event and if I returned it, I was eligible for a prize." What happened to the tagged rainbow trout? "It became part of our dinner, " Thacker said. "When I cleaned the fish, I removed the tag. After learning what it was for, I took the tag down to be verified. Also winning at the show, was Micah Young of Vernal, who earned the championship in Youth Showmanship, 13 and under, showing Bet Your Char? ismatic, a 5-year-old gelding. In the class, competitors are judged on their ability to fit and present a horse by performing a pattern. Young bested a field of 57 for the win. Youth are classified as competitors com-petitors 18 and under, who earn points by showing their own horse or a horse owned by a family member. event tags found Thacker admitted. "I went out a few days later and fished again for an afternoon but didn't catch another tagged fish." In the week since the first tagged fish was caught and turned in, four other tags have come to the sponsors for verification. verifi-cation. Four of the five fish have been caught at Big Sandwash and one from Steinaker Reservoir. The Family Fishing Event is sponsored by three radio stations, sta-tions, FM 98.5, KNEUandB92.5; Red Fleet and Steinaker State Parks; and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Tagged fish (roughly 300 rainbow trout) can be found in three reservoirs, Big Sandwash, Steinaker and Red Fleet. The tags, with or without the fish, can be checked for verification verifica-tion at the front gate at Steinaker State Park, the UDWR office in Vernal and several local businesses busi-nesses being advertised by the radio stations. Prizes and payouts for the event totaled more than $400,000. The Championship Paint Horse Show is the largest gathering gather-ing of paint horses on the planet.
