Sales & Service 1570 W.Hwy 40, Vernal 789-1970 Express Publisher MonicaFarnsworth knows too well the benefits of the American Cancer Society and is doing her part, one shake at a time, to help pay for expensive research trying to find a cure for cancer. Monica and her husband Les own L&M County Store in Jensen, where customers can buy a shake every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 pm., with $1 of the purchase donated to the American Cancer Society. Monica's fight with cancer started 11 years ago at age 27 years old. "I was way too young to have cancer, let alone colon cancer," explained Monica. It was the pain that finally drove Monica to her physician. She explained that she couldn't sit or lay down without experiencing experi-encing huge amounts of pain and discomfort. After hearing her description of what was happening, happen-ing, her physician said that she needed to talk to either a colon or back specialist. "I went to the colon specialist special-ist and what I was told was very shocking," said Monica. "Something "Some-thing that I never thought could have happened to me, let alone someone so young." The physician ordered a colostomy co-lostomy and did not have to look long to find a tumor the size of a tangerine. About a week later she underwent surgery where the physician had to remove most of her colon. "This was a life changing operation, one that changed my lifestyle where I have to do a whole lot of things just to be normal," said Monica. "Yes! I say yes, go and get your colon checked," said Monica when asked who she would recommend rec-ommend to anyone to be checked for colon cancer. She explained that she was the first one her doctor had seen that was younger than 50 with colon cancer. But since then, her cousin was only 30 when he was diagnosed with the same type of cancer. "It was 11 years ago that I had cancer, and 10 years ago I got involved with the cancer society and it is great because all proceeds go to to help fight cancer," can-cer," explained Monica. "They are trying to figure out cures and to get it under control. They are saving lives." Monica explained everyone needs to see the people involved with the area's Relay for Life "to better understand cancer and its survivors." This year's event will be on June 6 and 7. Throughout the day and night participants in the relay walking continuously. There is a candle light illuminating service with luminaries placed around the track in memory of those who have lost their live to cancer. Last year the local Relay for Live raised more than $180,000. "It's very emotional even for me, but if you want to attend you can get a real perspective on how cancer effects people and changes lives here locally," said Monica. There is a first-ever youth relay scheduled in Basin at Union High School on April 11 and 12 for those 18 and younger. Those interested in participating or donating can contact Monica at 789-1530. "Cancer impacts us all," concluded Monica. "I have had three dear friends die because of cancer in the past five years. It is a devastating disease and impacts a lot of people around here." 1 i ..It I ' t r.2A, - ' , I J S ' ' f ' . . : L&M CANCER SUPPORT Monica Farnsworth prepares a shake at L&M Country Store.
