Show r A10 Wednesday, March 19, 2008 Vernal Express oad moves closer to fundin Uintah County commissioner Darlene Burns spent most of the week of March 10 in Washington D.C. She met with Sens. Hatch and Bennett and Rep. Matheson to acquire legislative funding for a variety of tasks. ' . "We went with a request for help on Seep Ridge Road, " Burns explained. She spoke specifi- cally with Sen. Hatch about the county's request for $2.5 million in federal funds for transportation transporta-tion improvements on the Seep Ridge Road. Seep Ridge is located in the southeastern portion of the county. It is associated directly with the transport of energy products extracted from that area. Road improvements on the Seep Ridge Road are needed to develop an adequate road surface for product transport. Burns says the request will cover the cost of paving 75 miles of road through the county. To date, Uintah County has raised $2 million from the state legislature and $1.5 million in a challenge grant from Red Leaf Enterprise. Some of these funds will be applied to the completion of the road engineering by the fall of 2008. This work must be completed com-pleted in order for the road to be eligible for surface transportation transporta-tion program (STP) funding. Additionally, Uintah County is working with the Utah Depart ment of Transportation (UDOT) to deed Seep Ridge over to UDOT. This will make it possible to place the Seep Ridge Road on the STP list, which is updated every 10 years. "We feel that the improvements improve-ments of the Seep Ridge Road are very important to the county," Burns emphasized. "And we conveyed that significance to Senator Hatch." APR equals 6.75 Uintah County's reach into economic development has seen several changes over the last year, from being a department in Uintah County government and then reorganized as the Uintah Impact Mitigation Special Ser-. Ser-. vice District. District director Rob Behu-nin Behu-nin explained there are several components of the district that 'needed to be better defined including the traditional aspect of local economic development practices and procedures. Past of those changes includes addressing address-ing a job change by former director direc-tor of economic development Bill Johnson. "Johnson's move to UBATC where he can coordinate quality qual-ity training partnerships with business and industry with a special focus on petroleum, energy en-ergy safety and transportation is a good move," said Behunin. He ' then explained that this move fit with the district's guidelines to include an education and training train-ing aspect to encouraging busi nesses to Uintah County just as much as the USTAR program and having Mark Raymond mitigate the technological side and other high tech impacts of the energy industry when looking to locate here. Behunin described the county and cities in the early stages of redefining the traditional economic eco-nomic development plans the area used to implement. "It will be different than what we have done in the past," said Behunin as he described the planning process as just getting under way that will include the cities, county, chamber and other business and industry leaders as well as the public. "This is the very beginning and we will be looking for new and refreshing ideas on how to promote this area in the business busi-ness sense," said Behunin. "And we will be looking to coordinate these efforts with the other programs pro-grams already in place with the energy industry." IS III'!
