Deputy Dan Bruso said the number of victims was still unknown un-known Friday afternoon. "It started about 7 o'clock this morning when I started getting calls and the phone just keeps ringing, " he said. "I think I've got about six victims right now." Investigators are working with very little information right now. They know the burglaries occurred sometime between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. and were centered along 3000 West between 10000 North and 11000 North. Bruso said all the cars targeted tar-geted were unlocked. The glove compartments in all the cars had been rifled through, he said, but only one purse and two small electronic devices were reported stolen. "We really need the public's help on this," Bruso said. "If anybody saw anybody out that late during the night they should call us." Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call the Duchesne County Sheriffs Office at 738-2015. State won't charge Service manager The Utah Attorney General's Office said Thursday that it would not pursue criminal charges against a woman who has an ownership interest in Service Insurance of Vernal. Prosecutors have agreed not to pursue criminal charges against Debra A. Wilson in exchange for "information and testimony on agents at Service Insurance Agency of Vernal and Roosevelt," said Assistant Utah Attorney General Shelley Cou-dreaut Cou-dreaut in an e-mail response to the Uintah Basin Standard. The response marked the first time prosecutors have indicated that the state investigation into allegations of misconduct at Service Insurance includes the Roosevelt office. Wilson was identified in court papers filed late last month against Philip J. Timothy, majority major-ity owner of Service Insurance of Vernal, as a co-conspirator who allegedly helped Timothy keep premium refunds owed to commercial com-mercial clients of the agency. Timothy was charged Jan. 1 7 in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court with 15 felony counts related to an alleged pattern of illegal business activities. Timothy is the third person from the Service Insurance office of-fice in Vernal to face criminal charges. Co-owner Mark Foley and agent Bart Winterton, who was not linked to the alleged conduct con-duct of Timothy and Foley, each pleaded guilty to reduced charges under deals with prosecutors late last year. Coudreaut said the agreement between prosecutors and Wilson has no bearing on a review by the Utah Department of Insurance that could affect Wilson's insurance insur-ance license. Federal indictment for alleged shooter A federal grand jury has indicted in-dicted Pedro Banda Gonzalez,' the man accused of firing a shot at another man in March, prompting a lockdown of East Elementary School. Gonzalez was indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City for being an illegal immigrant in possession of a firearm. According to investigators with the Duchesne County Sheriffs Office, Gonzalez fired a single shot from a .22 caliber pistol during a dispute at the old Petroleum Downs Racetrack on March 14. He then fled into a wooded area that separates the racetrack from East Elementary. Elemen-tary. Gonzalez was discovered a short time later, hiding in the trees, and taken into custody. The 39-year-old had faced state charges of attempted murder mur-der and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person in 8th District Court as a result of the incident; however, Duchesne County Attorney Stephen Foote said Friday those charges would be dismissed in light of the federal indictment. Foote said the decision to pursue a federal charge against Gonzalez was made jointly between his office and the U.S. Attorney's Office. Gonzalez faces up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted, after which he would be deported. Vernal man pleads to sex w ith minor A Vernal man charged with rape in 2005 has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge. Dustin Troy Richins, 21, entered his plea Wednesday in 8th District Court to one count of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, a third-degree felony. According to court records, the victim told investigators that she got into Richins' car while it was parked in the Uintah High School parking lot after the graduation ceremony in May 2005. Once in the car the girl said Richins grabbed her by the arm and tried to pull down her pants. The teen told investigators that she told Richins to let go of her and to stop, but he continued to attack her. She said she "felt like she blacked out," a probable cause statement reported, but remembered re-membered waking up to find her pants down and Richins standing outside his vehicle, pulling up his pants. The girl said she got dressed and fled from the parking lot. Uintah County sheriff s detectives detec-tives made several unsuccessful attempts to contact Richins about the case following the girl's report. He was ultimately taken into custody in June 2007 after prosecutors obtained a warrant for his arrest. Following his guilty plea, Richins was ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation and complete a presentence investigation investi-gation through Adult Probation & Parole. He remains free on bond and is due back in court on May 6 for sentencing. i r v : I L-i..,-.,. t Uniting Talent With Opportunity & SOS I Staffing Part of the SOS Family, of Companies |
